A big difference is that the USSR genuinely had a different system, despite all its flaws, and up until the 1970s genuinely believed in their own vision of the world and did everything to spread it. For example, basically all the French intellectuals of the 1950s and 1960s were communist and many supported the USSR. Can you imagine this in regards to 2020 China? China has made almost zero attempt to win the minds of hearts of people. I mean, really, how could they? They are just a different flavor of capitalism and they are not willing to risk their business ties with foreign countries over such things. In the end, China and the USA are much more similar than the USSR and the USA were.
