Xiu xiu - a promise.
I hate to say it but I was filtered, there were parts of songs I liked. Ideas and s*** electronically but apart from that I more or less hated it. Ts not for me at all I hate this vocal style, every time this dude opened his mouth it immediately killed any potential vibe for me.
In this moment I understood early

Ehh, it should be more about the music instead of the cover tho.

it is just sometimes u get a cool (or in this case weird) cover along with it
i look forward to being taken to Funkytown
as for ur recc aight I recommend I'll Try Living Like This by death's dynamic shroud.wmv @Echiham

For context people say this is one of the greatest albums to ever come out of the vaporwave scene
but instead of sampling 80s music, it's sampling like everything else you can think of and in a very glitchy, off-putting way but also very striking way
honestly i have no idea what you're gonna think of this so feel free to tell me it goes hard or if it fuccin sucks
and if you happen to have actually heard this album then lmk and I'll think of something else!!
CD Factory is the one bro. my god.

Glad u liked it, I can say that this is and after a recent relisten like a week ago it's still one of my favorite albums of all time, it really still sounds so unique and the sample palette is so impressively varied yet cohesive
Like what other album samples If You're Reading This It's Too Late and the Sonic R game soundtrack fr
and yeah CD Factory is still sick, also i'm honestly surprised how moving that radio play sequence at the end still is esp with the applauding afterwards it does feel almost satirical in its inclusion which I think is really interesting
I could yap on this album forever man honestly but I digress, I'm happy I could put someone onto an album I hold dearly 🫂
Oh yeah and I will write my review after work today, sorry busy week

bro the drake sample caught me all the way off guard, when the beat dropped so did my mouth
really really good album man, and no worries i had a hectic week too haha
Pharmakon- bestial burden

Yeah this was a freaky ass album man. I did enjoy the listen though. Primitive struggle and autoimmune are a trip. I didn’t do much research into the artist but this is either the most well adjusted individual a person could be or they’re on a couple psych meds/psych watch.

its WACKY and FUN
i think it was good in principle but i think half of thread (including me) realized it was more difficult to search something we wanted to really recommend that was like super mysterous at same time
not a bad idea tho
My review is having sample clarence problems...
Im pushing it back
it is just sometimes u get a cool (or in this case weird) cover along with it
Coping HARD
Coping HARD
yall had no issues with album cover themes so far
but fine ILL KEEP IT MORE SIMPLE
Funkyworld: The Best of Lipps, Inc. is a 1992 disco/funk/italodisco compilation album by….Lipps, Inc. Going into this I legit only knew them for Funkytown, a song near the beginning of Shrek 2 but also (and more importantly) Dance Dance Revolution SuperNOVA for the PlayStation 2!!! Hell yeahhhhh

Anyways, this was an okay listen. There’s some decent/ambitious ideas throughout these songs (especially instrumentally) but most of them never come together well enough for me, sometimes because of really weak lyrics or electronic production which is pretty noticeable when each track is like 6-8 minutes, more of an issue on the second half though.
First off, I was not aware that Lipps Inc. was from Minnesota, or that some of the members would go on to work with Prince. This explains why the song I messed with the most, Tight Pair, feels like a solid The Time track. The yelpy vocals, guitar-led groove, the group chant of “TIGHT!”, all great. The main groove is still a little sparse, and that synth solo is kinda aimless though. But that guitar solo on the outro though? Dawg, I honestly don’t think I’ve heard an electric guitar being scraped like that before loool, at least not on a funk track like this, honestly one of the sickest things I’ve heard so far in this album recommendation thing we’ve been doing
Album definitely gave me a new appreciation for Funkytown as the song about wanting to move away is pretty timeless (and kinda hitting rn personally). The cowbell and guitar lick in the chorus are sex…the synths before the first chorus always struck me as a little awkward and they still do. I also never noticed how most of this song is just hooks. They’re good hooks though.
I feel like the rest of the comp to me were just an extension of how I felt about Funkytown with its strengths and flaws. With every cool idea like the string section and whole-ass piano solo on a track like All Night Dancing, there’s always something that sticks out in the rest of the song. In this case, it’s the chorus. That production on the choral parts is just drowning in schmaltz, and these lyrics dawg, the word “dancing” doesn’t even feel like a word anymore also
The strongest lyrical moments (apart from Funkytown but that’s a given) would be on Designer Music too. Pretty clear message against materialism, though the song has a level of melodrama surrounding it that makes it kinda come off like it’s from a musical.
Strongest electronic production would be the italodisco-y part of Rock It around the middle or the main synth playing in How Long (which I’ve definitely heard before now).
Alright, in summary, there’s some cool production throughout this but overall I think the only track I’d ever go back to would be Tight Pair. TIGHT!
Favorite tracks: Tight Pair, How Long
Least Favorite tracks: Choir Practice, All Night Dancing
