Nothing much dont worry about it. Theres still lots of things in later One Piece to love. Its just he became more of an mascot with a bit less screentime because obviously other characters have taken a more central role.

I think in the pretimeskip he felt like a real human boy that is often naive and childish but then sometimes just turns around and goes beast. Later on he more and more just cute.
