edit: to clarify i liked a lot of the other elements and the art and s*** obviously but idk s*** like that just stuck tf out to me bc otherwise it seems like a cutesy anime wit some violence here and there

They live in a world that revolves around people diving into an Abyss that turns people insane just so they can find some treasure. It was surface level cutesy at most but the world and subject material was always f***ed. Riko getting beaten and everyone accepting it like its normal helps drive home how f***ed the world is. Anyone who sees that scenario as an attempt to be sexual are the ones with the problem, not the show.
