I'm curious here since it's a debate in some of my circles. Do y'all ever count comedy, slice of life, and other genres published in shounen magazines as shounen or it that some kind of unspoken assumption that nobody is gonna count something as shounen unless it has action/fighting/competition of some sort.

Everything published on a shonen magazine is shonen to me so when making a list i consider comedies and slice of lives too. I only posted a top 10 but i got love for a lot of non battle shonen too. I guess shonen that has some competitive element to it stick to me the most cause i grew up with that genre and they hit the hardest but i still love my slice of lives and romcoms

Fire force? If you're reading the manga it gets that good? I thought first season was boring until the last 6 episodes and only on season 2 it started being something id look forward to

na I’ve been anime only up til now, might start reading it after i finish Dorohedoro tho. i feel the same, the first season was fine but this second season is a lot better and shows a ton of potential for the future imo.

imo if it looks, sounds, and seems like shounen, it’s shounen. it gets wayyyy too deep and specific when you start going off of where the manga was originally published.

Yeah, 2nd season expanded a lot on the lore of the world and i really f***ed with that. Also seeing some characters deadass die was something the series needed to raise the stakes. Lets see where it goes tho, hope the author doesnt fumble it

"looks, sounds, and seems like shounen"

Right, but what exactly does that mean. That's what me and some other people are trying to narrow down if we aren't just gonna take the easy way out of seeing what magazine it was published in.

Teenage male MC? Fighting/competition? Underdog story? There's bound to be something that connects the different shows together.

for me and pretty much anyone i discuss this with, we mostly take the latter stance. i recognize that those comedy/SoL type series published in shonen mags are shonen by definition but when we're discussing or ranking stuff it's more about that type of show you described since ultimately what mag its published in is irrelevant to us

ah, i just assumed you knew what i meant, didn’t know you wanted that point to be elaborated on.

what i meant was i use the generally agreed upon themes and characteristics of the genre to discern Shonen from other types of manga/anime, including themes of travel/adventure, maturation, and underdog power dynamics usually involving some sort of fantasy combat system and featuring a cast of characters that are teenage or younger, giving the series a youthful POV.

but of course, shounen is an umbrella term and barely worth spending this much time attempting to find a sure fire definition for.

Yeah if it’s published in shounen magazines I usually include the shounen label when referring to that series but I can see why you guys are talking about that topic

  • Jan 16, 2021

Btw i brought up shonen just because my hero was brought up and i wanted to see where it ranks up compared to similar series, usually i dont give a f*** about the shonen label since we dont have shonen magazines in italy
For example i only realized shouwa genroku rakugo shinjuu was a josei only after finishing it

No one calls To Love Ru a Shonen. Personally, i just call things how they are. Battle Shonen (i do say sometimes only Shonen tho bc everyone understands what i mean), Shonen rom com etc

The recents arcs made me drop it tho. I don't think they are well executed at all.
