D4DJ First Mix - 8/10

After having finished hundreds of anime, I should have learned my lesson about judging an anime by its cover. Well, I didn't, because I was genuinely surprised by how well written this show was.

My favourite instances of good writing in anime is when seemingly mundane, irrelevant events are used to reinforce the themes of the narrative, and this is exactly what D4DJ excels at. For example, in an episode that focuses on the main group wanting to improve themselves by testing out new musical styles in their performances, the show throws in scenes such as:

• A member of a different group changing her diet to start eating vegetables
• The main character realizing that eating in the cafeteria every once in a while instead of outside is pretty nice
• The main character complaining about how bored she's getting of her usual strength training routine

All seemingly random, throw-away events that work to reinforce the message of the episode: change.

On the production side, I loved the CGI. It's probably the best CGI I've seen in a TV anime outside of the two obvious shows by Studio Orange (Houseki no Kuni and Beastars). The texture on the character models isn't the greatest, but the animation is very lively and not stiff at all when compared to other CGI. They also used a lot of traditional animation techniques such as smears to give off the illusion of speed.

The OP slaps. I've gotten tired of OPs that use same, uninspired concept of: character introduction -> music picks up + action scenes -> music slows down + scenes that give hints as to what the arc is about. D4DJ's OP is conceptually different and that's enough for me to put it in my top 5 of the year to be honest.

finallly got around to finishing FLCL earlier today, soundtrack was incredible and there were a lot of memorable moments but other than that im not really sure what to make of it lol

already watched beck (not exactly rap anime but they did have a rapper in the group + the American rapper character)

Hypnosis Mic came out pretty recently. It's honestly a pretty funny show that doesn't take itself too seriously, but I don't know if that's your thing or not. I think the above clip does a pretty good job of depicting how goofy it gets.

Other than that, I can't remember any other anime off the top of my head I've watched that is about hip-hop.

Animation was too mid for an action packed manga like one punch man, especially coming after what madhouse did with season 1, but story wise it was dope

Have seen a few eps, thought it was aight, but what made S1 so special to me was that it was such a faithful adaptation of muratas work.
He is the most skillfull mangaka we have rn so with S2 being such a downgrade there is no reason for me to finish it if I can just read the amazing manga (am purely talking about the art, the story is w/e tbh)
