As the core audience for the Legend has it movement I absolutely think it delivered. To me this series isn’t about sales or trends, it’s about giving legendary artists a platform to release music the way they want to release it without label politics or sales expectations. Like Nas said in TSK “Lets get back to the art not the trend”. It’s given us the best album from each respective artist in yeas, not to mention the return of an icon in Slick Rick. Ghost and Rae may have fallen a bit short with their vision (still way better then their output over the last 10+ years) and Big L was a misstep, but to be it’s given us some great moments.
Mobb Deep had a massive return to form with arguably their best album since the 90’s, the sound, content and production were incredibly consistent and the album has some absolute anthems. Prodigy also sounds so organic on this. If you weren’t aware you’d never think this to be a posthumous album!
De La Soul also released their best album since Stakes and front to back it’s absolutely beautiful. Even the intro was very special and a unique idea that I’m surprised hasn’t been done before (to my knowledge). Like the Mobb album it feels incredibly organic.
Slick Rick did him, produced the majority of the album and for me I loved it. It could’ve done with a bit more storytelling and the dance tracks were very divisive but in all the vision was great and it works incredibly well as a full body of work.
Nas… now I know opinions on this are massively divided, but as someone who’s been waiting on this since the 90’s it absolutely delivered and is probably my favourite album this year (between this and Clipse). For me it feels like snapshots (of Nas/NY) in time from 80’s to present day with primo providing the soundtrack… which I absolutely love. It wasn’t what I was expecting at all, but I’m happy this is what we got! So many moments for me evoke the Illmatic feel and I love it! I feel this is a grower at a time where most albums aren’t given any time to grow… it’s all about instant reviews unless P4K or Fantano have people revisiting with positive reviews!
Rae and Ghost albums weren’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, just a level below the ones mentioned. I feel like a joint album would’ve been a much better idea personally.
Big L was what it was, a compilation album of songs song available on streaming (unfortunately with differing production). I guess it’s okay if you’re not familiar with the OG songs, but this was the one album I felt like we could’ve done without.
Going forward I’d love to see a second series. Each season having a different Illmatic producer do a solo album with Nas (hopefully Pete or Tip next). As far as artists, there are so many past legends that need shine:
Kool G
KRS
Rakim
EPMD
Public Enemy
Then you have acts that should have more classics like:
LOX/Jada
Meth
MOP
You also have Nas associates:
Firm
AZ
Mega
Q-Tip
De La Soul and Mobb Deep made it worth it
Surprised you didn’t FW the Nas album, from posts I’ve seen you seem to be someone that might
I f***ing love the Nas album I saw you said it’s prob your favorite Nas project this decade and I agree. I’m disappointed of the overall reception though, Nas rapping has an energy to it that I didn’t feel in the other Nas albums this decade
De La is #2 for me. Another excellent project. Not sure what to say about it though, it’s just a really good de La project with skits that leaves you a little heavy hearted for Trugoy. RIP. I guess what I’m getting at is that it feels like a well put together complete album.
Played the Mobb Deep one the other day. It’s good and I love Infamous it’s def one of my favorite 90’s rap projects but this album didn’t do much for me. The beats were pretty good and the rapping too but nothing really popped out at me it’s just some grimy NY rap and I know allot of people want that type of music
Ghostface was prob my number 3 project out of the series though. I was actually kinda surprised at how hard ghost was going no disrespect but I haven’t listened to him since like Sour Soul. Rapping wise this project was above DLS but under Nas. Still something about the DLS album as a whole that I like more
They definitely should do it again
Rakim
Q Tip
Ghost & MF DOOM
Capital STEEZ
Run DMC
Beastie Boys
GZA
Big Noyd
Foxy Brown
So many dope options to expand it
ghostface album was nice but i thought the other albums were whatever
but i do think it's a cool concept
They definitely should do it again
Rakim
Q Tip
Ghost & MF DOOM
Capital STEEZ
Run DMC
Beastie Boys
GZA
Big Noyd
Foxy Brown
So many dope options to expand it
Would rather less outputs, and more quality projects
Outside of De La Soul (just find them boring and overrated), the series was alright. Think I appreciate them actually dropping then the actual music itself.
Mobb was nice tho.
They definitely should do it again

A firm album with foxy using an AI filter would be nice. Since foxy is legally deaf she can’t really use her old voice without it unfortunately. Lyrics still there though. Shame because she had the goat female rap voice back in the90’s

Rakim actually did drop this year if you aren’t aware just not mass appeal ofc
Will also tell anyone who hasnt yet to go listen to the LL x Q-Tip album from last year. Def on the level of this series’ best

Made me want a Nas Q-Tip album next tbh
Would rather less outputs, and more quality projects
Those are options im not saying all of them should do it

Damn didnt know that about Foxy thats sad

I just think it’s a knee jerk reaction of reviews less than 6 hours after it dropped tbh. I feel like this will get its flowers as IWW did after a poor initial reaction. Both albums had unattainable expectations
not that much in my opinon but mobb deep and de la soul albums are great, nas album while is not garbage is not that good, the rest of albums i dont like
I enjoyed every album to some extent. I liked the Nas album the least which was disappointing because I was anticipating it the most. I would like more albums from legends. Would love if Nas got involved with the Jadakiss x Beanie album
