demo for what's left of za/um studio's next game is up on steam - Zero Parades

  • Esoteric Ebb just released its first day as a free demo that will also transfer to full release game. Highly disco elysium influenced fantasy game with a great sense of humor.

  • Tried playing this game, didn't know wtf was going on and dropped it after like 30 mins Will try picking it up again eventually but this pretty low in my priority list

  • Wow, I've never hung on nearly every word a game has had to say like this ever before. It really is as good as everyone says it is. A masterclass in storytelling.

I was a little worried towards the end of the first in game day, I felt like progress had halted and that I must be missing something. Then the 2nd and 3rd days come, you start to gain an understanding of the characters, the city and the politics and then the ball starts rolling. All of a sudden you start making connections, finding more pieces to the puzzle, collecting information, taking on seemingly irrelevant cases and it all feels so organic. Everything just starts falling into place and it's unbelievably beautiful and satisfying.

Even though I loved the dialog, it could feel a bit self indulgent at times with how overly descriptive some sections were or the way some dialog trees felt endless. There were only a few of these moments, but they stuck out to me. It also would've been nice if the skill checks had a visual component to them. The percentages are fine, but the moment where you pass or fail always felt pretty flat without any way of actually seeing your chances of success. The biggest issue I had was that I felt it was really difficult to discern elevation and the paths you were expected to take. I was constantly getting stuck on things or taking what I thought was the obvious path only to have to take a different less obvious path or go around something that didn't look like it was blocking the path in the first place.

Very, very minor gripes overall and they didn't affect my enjoyment in any significant way. Absolutely fantastic experience.
