Full tweet for those not wanting to go on a website owned by a neo nazi:

"Atheism is easiest when life is comfortable and within your control. But I’ve personally witnessed several times when people face things like a long prison sentences, terminal illness, violence or death.. something interesting happens.

Those who once claimed certainty suddenly begin praying, asking for mercy and hoping for something beyond themselves.

Because when you’re confronted with forces you can’t control, rebellion tends to fade, and humility tends to appear."

  • They're not wrong, but the opposite is also true. Religious people can sometimes lose faith and stop believing when life becomes difficult

Faith is believing in something without evidence. If you can do that cool but I personally can’t do that especially when the people telling me to are sometimes part of cults and grooming gangs.

It’s human nature to not want the "end" to be the end and Christian religious institutions went on an insane PR run during the late medieval/early renaissance period onwards so everyone is still afraid of the concept of hellfire and damnation

  • And they are weak minded people

  • i disagree with atheism being an act of rebellion but more so an epistemological view. dont matter how much trauma and plight im faced with, ill never be convinced religion especially the abrahamic religions to be foundational reality truths

Yeah. I have chronic kidney disease. I can have faith I’ll make it to next year but there’s no evidence and there a chance I’ll be dead. I guess I can see the appeal of "faith" but too many bad things have happened to me with my prayers unanswered, I cannot believe

  • no cause crises like that can cause anyone to flip how they are from atheist to thirst and vice versa

  • "There are no atheists in a fox hole" is a trite argument that goes back a long ways

A lot of people lose faith through hardship. Happens all of the time.
