I was looking into Lizzo's commercial fall-off and I think the biggest reason is that the lawsuit her old dancers brought against her brushed directly against the image and identity she was presenting herself with

This helps explain why other artists have been accused of other bad things, potentially way worse things, but retained a lot of their fanbase and commercial success

People seem to really get turned off when an artist says one thing or presents as one thing but is doing another.

My question for KTT is, do YOU care when artists you listen to do that?

Do you care whether or not Future actually drinks codeine?

Does it affect your listening experience? Do you seek authenticity in music? Or just good songs and that's it?

I think it’s lame that some artists perpetuate a lifestyle they don’t live which in turn can be adopted by the impressionable in real life, but if it slaps it slaps

so if the music is good enough you push through?

or does that only really apply if the artist is perpetuating something negative. Like for Lizzo it was kinda different tbh

Yes a big part of my listening experience is being able to relate to the lyrics and projecting my own lived experiences on to the songs. That's why music is so therapeutic to me

personally i enjoy when there’s at least a basis of truth, but the artists have freedom to build up and tell stories off of that.

if its total larping then yes it comes off as inauthentic. but being beholden to real life, when youre a storyteller, is stifling.

theres a line somewhere in the middle and it changes artist to artist, topic to topic etc

This is well said. I never bought into the idea someone can only make songs about things they've specifically lived through, because throughout human history people have been singing songs about other people

I think the big difference is now in the modern music industry people sell identities on top of making songs so when the IDENTITY starts to be based on a lie it gets a little iffy

    thank you!

and I agree, the identity needs an anchor to it, if its 100% fabricated like it often is, the music seems hollow after.

    for me anyway

i was a Rick Ross fan after the exposal so not fully

i think the only authenticity i care about with the music is that it’s authentic to the artist & respects the craft (i.e. stealing other demos for your own album is a no for me)

Pretty sure the reason Lizzo even blew up in the first place was because she was a plus size black woman making positive music. It was always an image thing with her because the music was garbage. So as soon as her image was challenged, ofc that was going to sink her because her music was never good

Yea that's my video in OP but when I post them on here I try to pose a different question to KTT because

    1) I don't want my threads to be straight self promo I prefer to try and create actual convos on here so I'm leaving a positive impact

    2) you guys are on a higher level of music discourse than the average youtube viewer imo so the questions can be a bit more fun

I think this is a fair take too. Idk if SHE is inauthentic but I think the label push def made her come off as inauthentic

I genuinely think it’s as bad as that but even Meghan has fans which I solely believe is due to her image as a plus size woman being positive too
