I was thinking about this a lot after Kid Cudi's Maui Wowie started trending, its super interesting because to most people that's probably not a top 5 song on AKNC

but as the average age on this site creeps up every year, there will be more and more examples of songs from our heydays going viral again and becoming the hot thing with a bunch of 15 year olds

do you guys see that as a good thing, or a bad thing?

A good thing for music and keeping it alive, but they are not as cool or adventurous as those who were listening pre-tiktok / reels because they were spoon fed the good music, while the others had to traverse the wilderness of the music scene at the time to develop their taste

But yeah, overall a good thing fs

But 9/11 for people who like to feel unique bc of their tastes

And what's interesting is what they're spoonfed isn't always what it was like back then. I think Maui Wowie is so fascinating because there have to be like 20 cudi songs from 2006-2009 that are more beloved than that but now kids will think that was the most popular one

older songs dont get audience, they appear in a global virtual playlist to be consumed and subsequently discharged from algorithmical bowels. out of millions of streams it is an actual handful like literally three to four people who end up on thematical forums or discords or acquire this or that as their new hobby or develop any profound interest in something that has to do with a 'viral' thing

the point of 'exposing' whatever to new audiences is the same marketing strategy that works to sustain a stream of profits into labels and industry pockets and feeds the producer of this content (artist or musician) with lies and false hopes

It's always funny going back to some legacy artist and seeing a totally unexpected song as number one on Spotify. you're just like huh. must have missed that video

And even if I were in the loop, why would I care? I'm a grown man with a full time job, man..

I think some people might have the fear of going to their favorite artist's show and being surrounded by 15 year olds or something. not saying it's rational

Definitely not annoyed but it is kinda sad like when Running Up That Hill felt like one of the biggest songs that year instead of a new song lol

Is there a legacy act who has a majority 15 year old fanbase? Those kids only seem to consume the music on TikTok and other short formed apps, they aren’t actually outside besides a couple of them

Not really, definitely a made up fear in some fans’ heads but the closest example is prob a band like Deftones

The Maui Wowie trend has been kind of crazy to see. It's kind of the most random song of his to blow up.

I think it's cool that people younger than us on here are discovering the songs we may or may not have gone crazy over 15 years ago. I do feel like people who lived through peak blog era (for example) are can be pretentious about it. Saying things like "Well you weren't there when this dropped" among other things.

On the flip side, I do feel like older songs blowing up are more or less suppressing new music in a sense. There are newer acts that should be much bigger imo that aren't just because of old songs that sound like what they're making blowing up in their place if that makes sense.
