It's certainly not a "new" concept but I've noticed a lot of artists focusing on free shows, pop-ups and the like, or something like J. Cole's "Dollar and a Dream" shows, in addition to the traditional concert
we know why they do this—it's to build hype, or create goodwill
but my question is, which of these types events has been more fun to you
if you've been to free shows where the location gets announced day of, is the hype and the pandemonium exhilirating, or do you prefer the regular old ticketed concert?
nvr seen a well-known artist for free. only thing like that thats came to my city as far as i know was when drake used to do Houston Appreciation Weekend where u could get free tickets by doing volunteer work for a charity

Yea this really is such a New York / LA focused thing unfortunately
I know Cole did a dollar and a dream houston once upon a time
this concept only works in major populated cities and during an old internet algorithm
JID did this in ATL but announced the location while I’m at work and the location already leaked (friends of friends of friends of the entourage spreads faster than we think today) before he even posted so people showed up within a minute of the post and the line was already wrapped
it’s a cool concept, but i think it’s to only generate hype but I’m sure the shows are amazing. it’s a lot different than Travis who did the DBR Rodeo throwback show in ATL and tickets were $15 for sale. I think that’s a better concept
ive seen carti like 6 times from self titled days till now and the best performance he ever did was that free concert on his birthday in brooklyn

Yeah. I think it's changed in a new algorithm but I'd argue that it is actually super effective in the new algorithm
because clips of these shows go viral all the time and help build hype. You're right it's probably a bit harder to get the word out, but it's a lot better for promotion after the fact

does that hype mean anything thought in the grand scheme?
Dollar and Dream is still a concept you’re referencing today that wasn’t built around hype, but an actual movement
JID used the “Dollar and Dream” hype to sell his album…and it was presented like a chance to reconnect with day 1s…but come on we all know that second point isn’t it lol

Different types of events under one umbrella, when I was talking about promoting after the fact I was thinking more about things like the Lorde pop-up in washington square park, maybe the young thug fulton courthouse thing although its a bit different when it's court-ordered
tyler the creator don't tap the glass pop-up, geese recent pop-up. the clips show hype in a visceral way, might not matter to you or I but makes a big difference in the algorithm

I think the Thug way is the right way to do it, no venue and no tickets. actually POP UP out of nowhere lmao
that’s what I always imagined a free show to be. artist just gets on top of a bus with a speaker type s*** and the crowd gathers and now it’s a free show
like when Bad Bunny got on top of that gas station
The only free show I've tried to attend (aside from comps/guestlist through work) was Carti's bday gig last year in Brooklyn and it was chaos to get inside and got fully shutdown before he hit the stage smh
Seeing Tyler fresh on Chromakopia on a boat at the navy yards was definitely a 1 of 1 experience. Amended set of just those songs but it felt full. I was also at the very front. Wish I got there for the DTTG one
ticket prices are insane rn
s*** sucks
Also this. You can bet those Geese prices next cycle are gonna match the after market prices, thats how a lot of live events are going, which just leads to more and more prices going up progressively if the acts keep momentum

Bruh I need the Geese tickets

Best thing to do is get on their mailing / text list & make sure you set alarms for when they put on fan onsales. Them ga / prime real estate tickets vanish

Nah I meant for this current tour. Both NY shows soldout and resale going for $200+
I'd say I'm actually very good at getting tix when they went on sale. When theres an event I wanna go to w my friends or my girl I'm usually the one securing the tix right when they go on sale
I just didn't decide I wanted to hit this tour until it was too late
It depends on the show, I think both have the possibility of being ass or being great

It'll go down closer for people who can't make it. I'd watch vivid tickets / stubhub
