Taylor Swift is signed to UMG under Republic records I believe.
I’m sure his team knows how much she got and is basing it from there. I feel like we need to know how big of a deal she got to see what is reasonable because Drake should probably have a deal 10-30% lower than her.
Swift's deal was signed in 2018, in which she was able to own her future masters. Her star power has tripled since then, so she's absolutely worth way more than whatever she signed for back then
literally just did it this rollout
Right, to his credit
But he was also very, very motivated
i think the infrastructure will come from his friends and financiers at Stake and Kick with him as the figurehead poaching artists away from majors with deals that don’t require repayment as they are structured into the larger umbrella business as part of the losses and research/development, thereby attracting even more talent to his movement…that’s if that’s what i think they tryna do
It goes beyond just financiers though right
When you sign to a major you have access to a bevy of resources that you’d otherwise have to seek out and connect the dots independently, especially when it’s comes to mass distro
I really think once he’s played the game a bit he’ll end up securing a partnership with a label due to the opportunity cost
I don’t think Drake was asking for way too much though. He is one of the few artists who could ask for that much and it be a fair negotiating point. Taylor Swift (probably a notch above him popularity wise), BTS, etc should get these numbers. He drops and tours often enough for labels to recoup easily.
This is what I've always wondered regarding Drake wanting such a big number from UMG. If the biggest artist in the world right now isn't even getting that, why does Drake think that he should?
Because he knows that he shouldn’t let Taylor’s contract stop him from asking for more lol.
Drake is going to coup d’etat Trump confirmed ?
@op
He may have not fulfilled it yet

So they know as much as anyone else, why would either side tell them anything lol
make them pay reaching legendary status at lightspeed, this not even a classic anymore it’s a tier above that

“It’s complicated” sounds a whole lot more believable than “I’m free” two days after you drop three albums though
He may not even be trying to go indie, he might just want that billion-dollar deal

I don't think anyone with a bit of sense has said it isn't complicated lol. Over the course of his career he's probably brought UMG multiple billions. You don't let a talent like that, especially when you know he's still going to drop more and tour more, walk out the door lol. Also let's not dismiss the fact that he can release unreleased songs post-retirement - UMG could eat for the rest of that mans life and after it lol
My point was that neither side is going to tell NYT podcast anything and it wouldn't make sense to do so. Props to the guy for looking into the story as it's interesting but he left just as uncertain regarding the situation as the rest of us lol

Ehh, you obviously don't want to let Drake walk out the door if you're UMG but (and obviously I have no idea i'm just guessing) there's a number for UMG where Drake just isn't valuable enough to that degree

https://twitter.com/zadcozzy/status/2056381503689392599I think it's complicated because this isn't purely a 'let me drop so i can get off of my label' thing
not when there's hundreds of billions of dollars at hand.
Out of Drake's mouth 400Ms wouldn't be enough to keep him (But i'd imagine also that 800Ms or whatever the figure is that he's seeking would be enough to stay)
Are we even sure he REALLY wants to leave the label infrastructure
Nigga could make so much money and set a standard if he go independent. Do the right thing Drake.

I think he made it pretty clear on iceman that he wants out the label infrastructure
If it’s true that he’s fully recupd that 400m for them a while back then he’s just leaving bread on the table
Drake has spent the better part of his career creating an ecosystem that allows him to play outside the bounds of the label infrastructure and basically just use the label as a bank for the rollout money.
Hes large enough now where he doesn’t need that arm either
If he dropped a rap, a dance album, and an R&b album just now then what genre makes the most sense for winter?
I think that first song on Habibti was an insight to what we might be getting.
Would be dope for Drake to do a folk/country/blues with outlaw vibes on some red dead redemption s***
it was literally in Variety magazine
why they getting a 50+ year old uncultured white dude to breakdown to them hiphop and social media and business

Was there ever some kind of directional input from the label, when he created his albums. I would say no
