A lot of human effort went into mapping the genres, but they're nevertheless generated by some algorithms I don't fully understand. He got laid off in 2023 so some aspects of the site are no longer being updated.
It can be viewed as a list or as a map, filtered by genre (over 5000+ of them). Don't be discouraged by the silly Spotify-generated genre names, you can find a lot of obscure and hyper local stuff through here
