I'm such a snob with films I just imagine myself going to see the new Dune and being so let down. Kinda my experience with the 1st one. Though I really liked the pacing and visuals in the first one.

the first or second? and what are your thoughts on the second? i recall you said it was about as good as the first

Growing up on Lynch's version made it a little harder for Dune Part 1 to sink in so it wasn't till the third watch that I was really able to let go of all my preconceived notions about the material and embrace where Denis took it.

We probably haven't had such an artful and mysterious blockbuster since Blade Runner or sound design/effects that instantly iconic since Star Wars every scene so finely wrought.

Only seen Part Two once (and I was blasted on shrooms) so it's hard to say but although it was an absolute rush, Im afraid the intangible elements I loved about the first one may have been lost in the transition to more of an action oriented tent pole. Need to see again asap.

I'm not a snob at all when it comes to music or other things but I admit my film taste can be pretty pretentious to some.

I totally understand for people who grew up loving Star Wars, Marvel, etc. and can see why that kind of thing would be exciting. (a couple of the original Lucas films are good and I admit I did like the first Abrams sequel.)

As for the Marvel films, not only do I dislike them I actually hold them in contempt.

Herzog and PTA defend capeshit and see their value so

Obviously been terrible for the industry though and I don't blame anybody for hating them but I will continue to enjoy them if they're done well by my standards.

I'll take artful and mysterious over a vapid cash grab anyday but I try not to mistake that for being great filmmaking. And I don't necessarily think Dune was great filmmaking. But it is nice to see a filmmaker doing blockbusters with his own unique vision and visual excellence. Even though I didn't love it, it certainly would have been way better than whatever trash the Jodorowsky d***riders think his version would have been.

Denis' Blade Runner is pretty good and to be fair I don't think a better sequel could have been done (especially not by Ridley Scott) considering the first film was so complete a sequel shouldn't have even really worked in the first place. But the first Blade Runner is vastly superior by every single metric (imo).

Yeah I was talking about the first Blade Runner and yeah I try not to mistake that for being great film making either which is why it took 3 watches for me to decide it wasn't fakedeep

Jodos Dune would've made Lynchs look like Space Odyssey I like Jodo but

Hmmm just cuz Herzog starred in one of them? Idk. Paul Thomas Anderson has always had a weird taste in film. He says films like Spiderman are at least getting people back into the cinema, but that type of filmmaking has completely destroyed the middle budget film. Studios will dish out 500 million dollars on Jurassic world 8 because they know they'll get easy returns on it. PTA obviously doesn't see why that's an issue because he can easily get funding for his films where most small filmmakers can't.

Yeah which is why I said it's obv been terrible for the business. They were speaking artistically not economically.

Idk about Herzog starring in one but he was talking about the mythology of heroes and the fact that you can't ignore humans desire to have paragons to look up to etc I'll try and find the video.

I just wanna be entertained. I don’t care how “objectively good” the filmmaking is if nothing about the movie captures my attention.

Herzog is the man. Huge influence on me in film school. I almost got to meet him in Munich but didn't have the money to go at the time

Not the first thing he's acted in though He plays this cynical tyrant father in a Harmony Korine film called Julien Donkey Boy. Not sure how you feel about Korine but definitely worth watching just for Herzog's performance im guessing a bit different than his character in the Mandalorian

The VVitch had a budget of 4 million Lighthouse was 11 million

then he got 90 million for Northman and lost the sauce and/or studio didnt let him go ham cause too much money. just one example but trust me id rather have a bunch of cheap and interesting films than what Marvel/Disney has turned the business into.

Cursory look at my highest rated films for each year this decade compared to last decade honestly make me want to cry a little. Looks like were running on fumes here in comparison.
