Finally finished listening to every XTC album. Apple Venus 1 gets a lot of love, but I found it a bit too grand and ethereal for its own good. Songs that should contain feeling get too bogged down in the grandiosity and syrupy vocals. It’s good, but I prefer the more upbeat stuff on Volume 2. Nonsuch and Drums & Wires are probably my favorite records from them overall.

Anyone in here know how to play piano? I'm tryna get good but don't really know the best path to doing it

Right now I'm memorizing the keys and generally know how to play chord triads. I learned Writer in the Dark yesterday because it's stupid easy but I can still only really play with one hand so it's very empty sounding

With guitar I just learned to play songs. I don't know THAT much music theory though, just enough to get by, and I think it would help a lot with piano.

what ya'll been reading recently? or the last thing you were reading/read.

They solidified a sound with Skylarking, but I think the next 2 records reincorporate some of the stuff they abandoned on it and just evolve their pop songwriting altogether. So many good songs on it.

I just started Infinite Jest cause I want something beefy to take on holiday with me so I'm gunna be stuck with that for a while now

But best thing I've read this year is Zama by Antonio di Benedetto, massively recommend.

Infinite Jest is a tough one. I really like DFW (especially his essays) but never had the attention span to finish it. Good luck with that lol. 570,000 words

Zama, haven't considered reading that but I've heard it has some Dostoevsky influence so might need to give it a try Lucrecia Martel is one of the best filmmakers of the last 15 years imo so I'm guessing the book must be pretty good.

I'm reading like 20 things at the moment, mostly all in pdf.

I learned about this site recently which basically has every book...and it's all free to download. Even has most obscure philosophy books, etc.

I'm just gunna be sat in the sun doing f*** all for a week so I'll read for a few hours every day until I've drunk enough beer that the words go blurry. Figure I'll get far enough into it by that point that I'll be able to finish.

And yeah there's a big Dostoevsky influence to Zama but it's distinctly Latin American as well, there's a really surreal, nightmarish feel to it. Worth reading for the final section alone which is a complete masterpiece. I've chucked the film on my watchlist

I dunno how you can read that much stuff at once man, I have to do one book at a time cause my memory is dreadful. That site looks great but I'm bad at reading anything longer than an article on a screen

Finished Oakley Hall’s Warlock a few months ago. Really good western that influenced Deadwood.

Actually took a break from reading so nothing as of recent, might jump into Johnson’s Jesus Son for quick read to get back into it or start BEE’s The Shards which looks entertaining
