Taiwanese New Wave...the apotheosis of filmmaking. There won't be another unless Yang comes back from the grave.

    Thoughts on Hunter

i got some enjoyment and meaning out of it but i really dont think im ready for cinematic dust yet. outside of the adjustment it takes for me to get used to the way they tell the story, way different style of visuals, dialogue style, pacing etc i have little to no context to appreciate its place within the medium

again not ready. but will try again with the 2nd half instead of letting myself totally tap out mentally by forcing the remaining 50min on myself at 11pm

i was the same way tbh. second watch was euphoric, but it might be my 3rd fav Tark now. Probably tied with Stalker, but Nostalgia punched me in the gut on my first watch

Tbh it's pretty well unlike everything else in all those categories at that time so a revisit down the road will illustrate how weird and unique it is. My first watch was a blast but it's a massive grower.

    i appreciate the attempt

It's more of an early Saturday night with some shrooms so you can be lazer focused type of thing instead of late Wednesday night but doing a chrono Tark marination will help too.

8 fam members all in consensus that its 5 stars

and how do you even go about marinating on films anyway?

You watch more Tark and marinate on his style until it clicks

And yeah Fam has uniformly high scores for Night of the Hunter too 👀 and The Master

Did you check out Leonards? I only gave it a few spins but it seemed very good and heavy

No but I was really impressed with this Cure joint. 16 years is one hellova break. Everything is still there

only fully makes sense in the end. It is a bit like a Lynch film.

even thinking of the opening scene gives me goosbumps

"The film encourages viewers to embrace its nonlinear, seemingly illogical narrative by including an opening scene in which a physician examines a man with a stutter. The physician asks the patient to concentrate on his hands and then suddenly relax. None of this seems related to his stutter, but the therapy releases the patient's mind, and he triumphantly says, "I can talk."
