Anything by Ursula Le Guin. You could start off with her most famous short story (not quite sci-fi even though she was a sci-fi writer - her work often slips beyond genre) It's really short and for some reason I get emotional every time I read the last couple paragraphs.

There are the famous ones like Philip K. D***, Isaac Asimov, etc. One of the benifits of sci-fi is that many of its best writers worked in short fiction, so you can sample their work without committing to a full novel.. I really like Harlen Ellison's stuff. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is his most famous story but he wrote a really great lesser known story called Paladin of The Lost Hour. (I think they made it into a Twilight Zone Episode?)

If you want something more modern, Ted Chiang is phenomenal. Story of Your Life (which the movie Arrival is based on) is a great place to begin, along with the rest of that collection. I think he's won 5 Hugo awards.
