they don’t make em like this anymore (killer joe 2011)

    Great film

  • Bully mini review after 3 listens:
cool atmosphere, don't mind the shorter songs. Not many songs really stand out to me since they seem to be deliberately sequenced in a way to blend into one another. performance wise, clearly there's a pretty big chunk of clunky AI fill-ins and Ye sounds quite anemic on many tracks. Lyrics are inoffensive, simple, repetitive and sparse, probably a good thing. I do like that he sometimes lets the songs breathe and the sample close out the track.
Fav tracks: BULLY, SISTERS AND BROTHERS, PREACHER MAN

    Great film

Gave Xiu Xiu - FORGET a listen for the first time in a decade honestly one of his best. I plan on catching up to all his work soon. You've been keeping up with all his releases?

  • My roommate already moved our even though he had to pay half of April, so I've just been by myself until I move out in the old apartment like

Crazy i was literally just thinking this same thing a few days ago lol. I didnt relisten to it that recently but i was just thinking about how amazing that album is

And "Wondering" is still in the upper echelon of his poppier tunes, if not his peak for me

Havent kept up with anything since Basket of Fruit. Havent even looked to see if he's put anything out after that one tbh

And "Get Up" is so damn great. One of the best crescendos i've heard in the past decade

"Queen of the Losers" still sounds like a first draft for the character select screen on one of the early Mortal Kombat games too, in the best way

Whole album may be his melodic peak. Just brilliant pop songwriting while maintaining that Xiu Xiu experimental edge. Might be in my top 4 with his classic 00s stuff

I’ll get around to it. I haven’t really caught up with hip-hop in years, any recommendations? I don’t care for the post Some Rap Songs style Earl’s been on, or any of the other guys in that “scene” like Mike, so anything outside of that please. You know, like percussion, hooks, energy, etc.

Oh man you are gonna HATE the new Earl/MIKE if you decide to listen. Everything you've been complaining about them for the last 5+ years distilled into a woozy, marble mouth, 1 hour garble contest

  • By no means do I love BULLY; it's extremely flawed; but the same critics that disparaged Kanye's lackadasical energy in his performance are going to praise the s*** outta this new Earl/MIKE.

(Ofc implementing AI IS a very valid critique but the songs Ye is actually rapping on are fine with the more subdued approach.)

Haven't seen one review acknowledge that he's subdued because he's f***ing obviously medicated to the teeth. Maybe its a little soon for him to be making an album after all the s*** last year but its like do you want bipolar manic lunatic again or to let the guy find his footing. Not every album has to be a big statement.

Yup, I don't hold the performance aspect too much against him. Just wish he would re-record those terrible sounding AI parts/songs. The production is downbeat and mellow enough to allow him to match it with a less expressive performance. The problem is in his prime he was one of the most charismatic and energetic rappers ever so people may be thrown off by that and using it against him to deliberately downplay the intentions

yeah. still hasnt settled in with me yet but i do also tend to find more acceptance of artistic bunts instead of everything either needing to be some grand work or its just mid/they fell off

its weird how it does feel very un-kanye in terms of energy even though theres still more kanye-isms scattered throughout (mostly production wise) and its more backward-looking than he's ever done. i've also noticed how it's actually pretty relaxing in a way that his music hasn't been before, even at its most downbeat emotionally

him saying a lot of nothing is a valid criticism and i definitely do feel more of the album's meaning and value from the production
