    film noirs are crime films from the 40s and 50s, while neo noirs are a subversive and updated version of film noirs that came out in the 70s

    There's barely anything noir about it beyond some of the cinematography and themes. One of the most unique Hollywood films ever, really hard to define.

    I think Double Indemnity is typically considered THE noir movie. Just given that Chandler helped adapt Cain and it laid out a lot of the criteria. Wilder is from Germany so that expressionist stuff has roots as well.
