I agree that TOTK is a 9, hell I would argue it is even higher than that, but to then score this game a 6.5 is wild.
You could do the same over a***ytical BS for TOTK. Side quests are all a joke and arguably worse than FFXVI, the story is mostly told through finding optional tear drops on the world, the graphics are from 2010, the items are all pointless because they break, game runs at 20 fps half the time, etc.
It is just funny to me how Zelda/nintendo games in general get a pass for everything that other games get drilled an run through like a fine tooth comb for.
One, Zelda has mechanical depth that far exceeds FF XVI and it’s side quests for the most part fully engage with those mechanics, even down to the Koroks, allowing those side quests and excursions to be more varied and engaging, presentation is also universally consistent so there isn’t any weird disconnect between main content and side content, there’s a universality there that XVI lacks generally.
Two, why the f*** would I complain about the graphics when it’s on a system that’s nearly 2 generations behind PS5/XSX? Art style to me always trumps graphics. Nothing I brought up in my criticism of XVI is as superficial as graphics. I didn’t get into any technical details in my criticisms.
Hell, I played XVI in 30 FPS mode, and I think it’s graphically the best JRPG ever made with some of the greatest cutscenes and set pieces I’ve ever seen in a game. It’s a looker for sure.
I also enjoy the durability of TotK because it forces you to engage with the combine ability and to switch up/experiment with different weapons.
The crafting in XVI, by comparison, is straight up broken.
in fact, the entire economy of the game is broken. There’s f*** all to buy in the game with all the money it throws at you. The looting is also godawful, because you just get crafting materials that you already have hundreds of, or 15 Gil.
Sometimes, sure, a weapon, that’s then rendered almost immediately obsolete so it just becomes another sellable item to accumulate more money that you have NOTHING to spend on.

It’s so crazy being in an endgame area, having millions of Gil already, then walking across an item that gives you just 10 Gil.
In an ENDGAME area.
Like, you don’t need it, but what the f***? What is that supposed to do? What am I gonna use that for?
It’s mindless shiny placements to get you to ever slightly move the a***og stick to the left or right.

yeah you can see too many failed design decisions in economy , side quest , gear lol

What’s wild is the game was apparently ready to release last year, so they’ve had months to polish it.
They could have rebalanced the economy at least, but I guess they didn’t have any playtesters? Or they didn’t think it was that weird?
Imma get this mfn sword
I’m hoping they treat this like they did 12/15 and add/rebalance things over the next year or two.
Given this is the team behind XIV and Yoshi straight up saying they’ll be listening to player feedback, I feel like they will to at least some degree.
Rebalance the economy, maybe better redistribute the side quests throughout the story so you don’t get these random ass dumps of quests.
Additional difficulty settings, add more banter and things with party members, ability to customize them a bit in terms of gear or abilities (would be cool if they added a variation of the AI system from 12).
Add weaknesses to enemies (fire, ice, lightning etc.) that modify damage so you have greater incentive to switch out Eikons.
Maybe even add a mini game or two to the Hideout at least to kind of switch things up a bit, flesh it out.
New Hunts with entirely unique enemies, not just reskins.
BOI > Torgal.
Torgal sucks dude. Terrible damage output and his healing spell is completely worthless.
okay give ff as many 4.5s as you want, but leave torgal out of this!!!!!

I mean, he’s a dog. That’s cool, but as a companion IN combat, he’s not that useful.
I was hoping when he had his tranformation|| that would have led to some evolution gameplay wise, but nah. All I noticed was some extra ||particle effects, maybe a slight damage bump.
In fact, I can’t tell you the number of times when I actually did want to use him just to do something and I’d accidentally drink a potion instead. Now THAT was annoying and made me actively avoid using him.

i actually agree with most of your criticism. it seems like i’m generally enjoying my play through more than you did, but i’m not at the last 3rd yet so we’ll see

oh yeah, big agree on the they should’ve made him entirely automated or have a better button mapping. the left dpad to switch doesn’t work
LMFAO
YOU ABOUT TO GO THROUGH IT
What do you mean

I mean, yeah, he’s cute. I wish Clive would interact with him more in cutscenes, show him some love. Outside of the transformation scene he doesn’t seem show that much affection, or dedicate much of his attention, towards Torgal.

bro i love u, and i’m sorry
You talking about gotterdamerung?
Yeah. Need dat
Yeah. Need dat
I think he thought you were talking about another sword. Only a couple hunts and quests to craft it and you are good to go
What do you mean
You got many a side quest and conditions required to unlock it
also you can only unlock it basically right before final quest with all the conditions needed ( not a story spoiler just a spoiler of how long it takes to unlock )

nah I mean same one you have to go through a lot between when you get the blueprint to actually unlocking.
