Barbershop
Teddy Perkins
Crank dat killer
Cancer attack
Ban just barely missed the cut for me.
But I'm clearly a bigger fan of the surreal comedic episodes.
If I had to give an honorable mention, it's probably the pilot. Smart dialogue, tightly written.
He dropped BTI and the screenplay and said “let’s make this into a show”
Commendable as s***
I love BTI and that screenplay with the interactive videos, he showed his potential back then already. Also love how the music videos from that era tie into the album and screenplay. But I don't see many similarities between them tbh. I guess the screenplay also has this dream like structure where random things happen and it's just never addressed again.
I would've liked to see that Deadpool show, can't wait to peep Mr and Mrs Smith (even though I wish Fleabag lady was still involved). He needs to make a show with Michaela Coel too, pretty sure they already did an interview or something together
Just remembered that Donald and Abella Anderson were friends during that era
Super random
I've probably done like 5 sessions. they're pretty cool once you get used to them, great for stress relief or to try to think differently about problems
dude who invented them used to take massive doses of ketamine before going into the tanks to the point where he was talking to dolphins
is it scary at first?
feel like i’d panic once they close the door lol

have u done the last part before ? @p_p
think i’m gonna do a rewatch really enjoyed s4
don’t remember anything from s1-2
i’ve been putting off watching the last two episodes and trying my hardest to stay out this thread these past couple weeks. but I just finished watching the last two episodes
still processing it but all i can say rn is that was one of the greatest series finale i’ve ever seen. Darius is us
we didn’t deserve this show
Darius was in a different world like Cree Summer…
I got so happy when I saw her, probably bc I was high lmao. i knew they were gonna leave it all open to interpretation but I think it’s clear he was in the tank the whole time
maybe I’m just on a final episode high but I feel like it’s a contender for the series’ best episode
What was the worst episode of Atlanta?
I think to me it was Values but it still wasnt a bad episode
Value is prob the most underrated episode of the whole show imo
4 > 2 > 1 > 3
Even though Season 4 has some slow episodes I'm not a big fan of, it also has some of the funniest episodes in the whole show. Crank Dat Killer, Light skinned-ed and the finale had me dying
The Goof Who Sat By The Door and the Tyler Perry parody were great too
I still can't believe Childish Gambino of all people really gave us this show
you can’t believe Childish Gambino, the brother who graduated from college and won an Emmy for TV writing and also wrote a screenplay to accompany his album, gave us a high-quality show?
y’all be tryna son Donny G man lmaoo. agree with the season rankings
Probably the finale of Season 3
either that or The Big Payback. but even those episodes were really thought-provoking and unlike anything I’ve ever seen from a show. what a show when the weakest ep is still an 8/10
Breaking Bad
Mad Men
Atlanta
Succession
Sopranos
The Wire
they gonna hate on you but this a nice list
my top 5 Atlanta eps offrip:
Teddy Perkins
Three Slaps
New Jazz
The Homeliest Little Horse
It Was All a Dream
honorable mentions:
Alligator Man
Crabs in a Barrel
Crank Dat Killer
Big difference is Sopranos last season built up the ending and alluded to ideas being possible. This? It was never established that everything could have been a part of Darius imagination. This was just a lazy attempt to be added to that conversation.
remember his monologue about the dog in the very first episode?
def don’t think the entire series is all Darius’ imagination but this last episode is for sure. the show has always played with the loose lines between dream and reality.
did Paper Boi kill somebody? is Van really a cannibal? did Earn really camp out for 3 weeks to meet D’Angelo? was that man Marcus Miles really riding in an invisible whip?
we’ll never really know but in the end, it doesn’t really matter
nobody mentioning Cree Summer popping back up

perfect use of her. voice acting legend and the female version of Darius

amazing pilot. season 1 in general is just stellar. none of the episodes touch the highs of s2-4 imo but it’s a masterpiece and is perfect at immersing you into the world of the show before that very world is constantly brought into question in every single season afterwards. Donald really Trojan Horsed everybody
is it scary at first?
feel like i’d panic once they close the door lol
wasn't for me personally
the water is shallow and the door is right there if you wanna open it yourself. a lot of places have a button inside to turn the light on if you get scared too

can you pee in the pool
can you pee in the pool
if ya wanna float in your own piss for an hour, sure. water gets recycled and filtered between every use

I can't believe this nigga
gave us a show that portrays the black experience so well
If this was Terrance Nance or Jordan Peele it wouldn't be so weird to me, it would be expected. But it's shocking from Donald Glover. Like pretty much no social commentary was present in his music until this show. People on here will hate on him for everything else but even they have to admit Atlanta is flames, the acclaim is universal. That's part of what's so shocking. I fw BTI heavy so I'm very aware of the unnecessary hate he gets
I'm not saying I expected the show to be bad or fail and I'm aware of his writing background on 30 Rock etc. Just find it surprising that him of all people delivered it

Did you not listen to Camp or BTI bro? especially in Camp, he rapped about racial issues all throughout that album.
I don’t get what that pic is supposed to prove. your argument basically boils down to “Gambino acts white so I’m shocked to know he actually has the experiences of a black man” which is very reductive
its the same type of personal judgement that he calls out in his music and throughout this show

did Paper Boi kill somebody? is Van really a cannibal? did Earn really camp out for 3 weeks to meet D’Angelo? was that man Marcus Miles really riding in an invisible whip?
we’ll never really know but in the end, it doesn’t really matter
First episode also has Ahmad White talking to Earn on the bus, then police cars with some sirens blaring drive past, before Ahmad gets off the bus and walks into the woods with that dog
Normally I'd consider an ending like that lazy, forced and pretentious. But it feels like they thought of it from the start and have been building towards it throughout the show. That's what makes it so brilliant to me. It's an ending that's truly left open to interpretation, they provided enough evidence to support either theory. You can decide what's "real" and what isn't. And you'll probably end up switching between the two whenever you rewatch it

I'm ngl, I don't go back to Camp much because I can't stand that style of rapping or the music on there
I'm not hating on the guy. Even the song you posted is about his own experiences on how other black people felt he's too white (which is an issue) but it's not really social commentary on the universal black experience that this show is
Like imagine Big Sean made a TPAB type album out of nowhere. He's been relatively neutral when it comes to political and racial issues, his music quality hasn't really been there like that, so it would be surprising. That's kinda what I'm saying. Gambino had the credentials but his work before Atlanta wasn't on this level. In terms of quality and the commentary

not liking the album is def valid. I don’t even think he likes the s*** anymore lol
but my point is, he did speak on black issues throughout that album. most of it was from his perspective but not always. in the song Outside, he raps about his close cousin who looked out for him when they were kids being hardened by the street life and the two of them losing their bond. it’s a little reminiscent of what Earn and Al’s relationship seemed to be like prior to the series
She don't want me in a lifestyle like my cousin
And he mad 'cause his father ain't around
He lookin' at me now, like
"Why you so f***in' lucky? I had a father too
But he ain't around so I'ma take it out on you"
We used to say, "I love you, " now we only think that s***
It feels weird that you're the person I took sink baths with
Street took you over, I want my cousin back
The world sayin' what you are
Because you're young and black, don't believe 'em
You're still that kid who kept the older boys
From teasin', for some reason
It’s definitely not TPAB-quality on any level but it’s a far cry from the narrative I often see about Bino never speaking on race at all and hiding his blackness only to do a 180 once Atlanta dropped.
A lot of the same ideas that I see in episodes of Atlanta reminds me of the things he talked about in his songs and interviews years prior - going back to what I said above about the song Outside bearing similarities Earn and Al’s dynamic
There are plenty of dudes who act like Donald Glover that grew up in the hood or immersed in black culture but it seems like people would rather forget that at times to get in jokes about his weirdness. and it’s funny at times NGL but when I really think about it, it makes me understand why that nigga has such a chip on his shoulder lol
