The jules episode confused tf out of me. I couldn’t tell what stuff was from S1, what stuff took place during S1 but is new to us, what stuff is happening after season 1, what is imaginary
So everything was set during season 1
But the last scene was shortly after the end of season 1, and jules comes back?
It’s mostly a fever dream. Most of what you saw didn’t physically happen with the exception of her sit down with the therapist, her memories of rue and other things from season 1, her father coming to get her and the ending. Everything else was a combination of memory and imagination
So
1 Jules runs away to New York
2 Jules gets caught and is forced to come back
3 Jules goes to therapy/what this episode is about
4 Jules sees rue again for the first time before she goes to meet Ali
Gonna do a S1 rewatch now that we have more context to Jules’ behaviour throughout the season
think i liked rues ep more
this one had some great moments, but kinda wish it was less about contextualizing last season and more about exploring the psyche of jules. still a real good little special
I think Levinson has finally found the right tone for his show. But he still can’t get rid of some of his tricks.
Drama relies on tension, tension is built through length. When entire episodes are structured like 50 minutes music videos, you sacrifice drama for trickery. You try to impress your audience with complex setups, cool tracking shots, short and dynamic scenes, cinematography which would make pseudo-cinephiles from Tumblr cream their pants... and that ends up being dishonest. If you want to treat serious themes such as d*** addiction, you can’t film your story like a music video or a commercial. Thats disrespectful. That’s why directors like Scorsese, Gondry or Boyle - who all seemed to have inspired the style of this show - knew when to stabilize their cameras and film drama in a simple shot/reverse shot setup. Just watch Jake’s fights with his wife and his brother in “Raging Bull”, you’ll get what I mean.
Rue’s episode was almost perfect to me. Levinson focused on her because she matters, because her suffering needed to be treated with delicacy. So he filmed a 45 minutes conversation and it felt raw, honest, authentic, real. You were there with her. You couldn’t escape this situation and you could feel the length of this discussion without being bored because what was going in front of your eyes was important and treated as such.
Jules’ episode had some flaws but overall, Levinson managed to find a balance. Fantasies and memories were filmed like a kind of heightened reality so the use of stylish setups was right. Her conversation with her therapist was filmed with long, mostly static takes and it felt also right. But the music was just too much. It felt manipulative and even unnecessary and it took me out of the episode during crucial scenes because it reminded me of things that I hate about the show. Anyway, the episode was good but the f***ing music, man.
I hope season two will be more serious and mature. The other characters aren’t as interesting as Rue and Jules, they need to be put aside. This isn’t f***ing “Skins”.
great review

if she can pick a wide range of good material for her next projects I don't see why she can't be

I think she’s good, but the stans be going overboard sometimes.
Rue's episode was wayyy better, Jules' ep had me confused the whole time and basically had no linear plot.

nah she’s solid tbh the hype is well deserved
Production starts early April & they’re still casting new characters
Kinda nervous with how many new characters they’re adding, don’t want a situation where the original cast don’t get as much air time

Jules and Rue are truly fascinating, also that jock who’s a repressed bisexual or something could be interesting. But most of these characters are basically the ones you would find in any teen drama on Netflix.
The award-winning HBO series “Euphoria” is casting a lead role for its second season. A Black male actor, aged 18–25, is wanted to play the role of Jamieson.
