i don’t respect that he struggles to write a verse on his own, he always needs to hear a dozen other people on a beat first to know how to approach it
you know the standards are lowered for him when you had people excited that he was going to rap all his parts on BULLY instead of letting AI do it, which is just ridiculous. that’s the bare minimum, the fact that AI was even an option that far into the creative process (or really in the process at all) is an affront to artistry itself. and he still didn’t remove all the AI, he couldn’t be bothered to record the last song himself.
Nobody has ever claimed Ye to be the best RAPPER of all-time though. That ship sailed with Pablo.
The claim is always that he’s the best hip-hop artist.
And that’s not some soft dog whistle distinction that “rap is not art”; rapping is a skill in the same way singing is. When we’re talking about the best artist we’re talking about who makes the best music overall, not just who is the best at the art of rapping
