Sitting here listening to nwts while i pack up for a move and man I forgot how much of a classic this was, really a flawless project
I think a lot of people including myself sometimes fixate on what Drake is not instead of appreciating what he is and what he brought to the game. This s*** ain’t Kanye creative but it’s damn near on that level, it’s not as insightful as a Jay-Z classic but it’s more entertaining and more versatile. Obviously it’s not as substantive as Kendrick but it isn’t trying to be. It’s just some fly s***, well executed, rnb influenced, with a pop sheen, polished production beat switches nothing really like it, and the raps are elite and legendary.
Got me thinking though how many does he have? I’d definitely say Take Care is also pretty much flawless, it’s longer and slower than NwTs but it also has more depth and has some iconic tracks and production. Those are his only two albums I can definitively say are classics.
Tape wise I’m giving him SFG and IYRTITL obviously and I also think Care Package is a classic top to Bottom as well, really feels like the version of Views from the 6 we never got as well as kindve like his lost tapes
But yeah outside of that I wouldn’t say anything else is undeniably classic even though he has some other projects that are very good (More Life, HNM, Her Loss etc)
So yeah SFG, TC, NWTS, IYRTITL, & Care Package
What yall think? More? Less? Or is this spot on?
Hmmm… idk what else but it just feels like he has another one or maybe even two more but idk off the top of my head it just feels right
To me? Everything from So Far Gone to Views is classic. I'd classify those as S-class Drake releases. I'd classify More Life, CLB, Honestly, Nevermind, Her Loss and $$$4U as A-class releases (with the potential to become future S-class releases) and I'll classify DLDT & For All the Dogs as B-class.
Imma get serious
Take Care - pop / RnB classic
IYRTITL - hip hop classic
WATTBA - hip hop classic
Views - global / pop / RnB classic
NWTS - Drake classic, most well rounded Drake in terms of all the different styles he does
And even if we don’t agree that these are all classic albums they each atleast have 2 or 3 songs that are classics in their respective genres and markets. Thats pretty impressive
So Far Gone - Groundbreaking mixtape
Take Care - Not even worth explaining. Quintessential Drake album
Nothing Was The Same - Again not worth explaining
If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late - Another Classic mixtape. The ethos and origin of modern Drake as an artist.
Views - The most controversial but it’s just one of the most ubiquitous albums of the last 15-20 years. Probably will be the last rap album to ever sell 1 million first week. Quality of course is not the same as the others, but quality isn’t the only qualifier of a classic album to me
