the solution that worked for me was to listen to "I am/They are" rap not derogatory "I am/ You is" rap.
gucci last mixtape is a perfect example of the former.
any other good examples?
I truly truly truly do not believe in music having this much power. It's just music. I listen to Drake 24/7, I ain't rich. I listen to Travis Scott 24/7 and I am not raging out nonstop. I listen to Cash Cobain 24/7 and I f*** absolutely no b****es. It's just music fam.
listening to cash cobain off the honey & henny with no shorties in sight >>>
This speaking heavy to me I return to the thread bc I’ve always listened to rap and been more of a fan of Griselda/boom bap/Gangster rap for the longest.
A couple weeks ago I was in the middle (literally) of a mass gang related shooting with over 200 shots in a parking lot, by a miracle didn’t get hurt. But at night I feel anxious and listening to that kind of rap music at night makes it 10000000x worse.
Music is therapy so I guess it’s common sense to know when and how to use it
it’s not the rap music but the 808s that are commonly used in most rap music that is negatively effecting your mood. 808s = crash out.
RXK Nephew and Tyler the Creator mostly some Skepta here and there. Aside from that random soundcloud artists. Mostly RXK though (last year I was his #2 highest listener on Youtube, no lie)
Only partially lines up with all you said in the first post tbh. I don't listen to RXK, but both Tyler and Skepta aren't necessarily very violent rap music. At least, not nowadays. I mean Skeppy indulges, but I find him quite balanced, releasing a lot introspective music as well.

this is f***ing devious behavior lmfao
Because I hold rap in very high regards as the best genre of music, so I hate that it leaves me feeling like this but also think it needs to be discussed. In a way I'm concurring with the prejudiced views on the genre (and black culture by extension) of outsiders and detractors that reduce the music to exactly what I said; s***violence and d**** when thats more of a reflection of this period than the game as a whole. Its hard to discuss that without the accusation of being an outsider yourself, although this thread has been mostly civil aside from a few lame responses like from @early and @Mandarini
Can’t see much of a solution outside of introducing gatekeepers
I've been anxious about making this thread for a while, but screw it.
I wouldn't really explain it as rap making me feel violent or being a "bad" influence on me, but the best way to explain it is that when I go some time without listening to it, say 2 or more days, my spirits feel lifted and I am in an overall more social mood. I've only noticed this with rap, nothing else (I mainly only listen to video game music outside of it though)
I've heard of others having a similar experience and just wanted to see KTT2s thoughts on it. The only logic I can make of it is that the messages, tone, and intent behind the things you listen to really does effect your state of mind whether or not you believe it, and those effects are amplified with rap due to it being the most verbally expressive and lyrical form of music, and the subject matter of most rap I consume being rather asocial. The obvious solution is to find more positive rap to listen to but its pretty difficult to find it that doesn't evolve around the subjects of violence/crime/drugs, sex, and egotism without going into cornball positive Logic territory. Not that it doesn't exist, I just wish there was more of a demand for good spirited and uplifting rap.
Lol this doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.. only makes sense if you only listen to stuff like drill music or XXXTentaction 24/7
This thread feels very disrespectful to hiphop as an artform and culture and makes me feel some type of way tbh
what? no seriously how is this an answer
It’s just an AI automated response, don’t think too hard about it
Music is very powerful, much more than people believe. If you’re putting bullshit in your ears 24/7, don’t be surprised when you feel like bullshit and have bullshit thoughts. It’s the main reason I don’t listen to violent rap anymore, and also why i generally stay away from depression-themed raps
Some good rappers who’s music won’t make you feel like s***: blu, smino, 454, oddisee, the cool kids, sir Michael rocks, valee, common (new album with Pete rock is great), tisakorean (will make you dance), little simz, sixpress, the underachievers
Also instrumental music is great of course
