Nov 19, 2021Natural talent who makes high quality entry level music for a large umbrella of people. That’s a needed commodity but I don’t personally find it interesting. It’s a lane he fills tho.

His aesthetic and dress is nothing like MJ.
His lyrics and subject matter are nothing like MJ.
His production is nothing like MJ.
He just sounds like MJ, to some people. Personally when I was listening to him in middle school, I never felt like I was listening to Michael. Felt like I was listening to The Weeknd. Only when I started coming here did I see people drawing the MJ parallels.You can't help sounding like someone. That's the same reason people said Desiigner was a future rip off when in reality New English doesn't sound like any future project.

This is why The Weeknd is a better artist you don't listen to his songs (save for a few like A Lonely Night) and think oh that sounds like ___ artist or song, you just know he has a unique identity.
Again, Bruno Mars is excellent as a performer/singer but he'll always be associated with his predecessors whereas The Weeknd is the first "The Weeknd"
