rapping and singing are 2 branches off the same tree. both have high skill ceilings and low levels of entry(singing's is a little higher tho).

  • Nov 10, 2020

Vocal and range wise, singing requires more talent.

But in terms of flows and songwriting, rap requires more talent.

I can sing and rap and have recorded both types of tunes on my own. If you train your voice, hitting certain notes isn't really that hard but you'll have to train even harder if you wanna go in that Whitney/Mariah level.

But flowing on beat while spitting decent lyrics takes almost the same amount of skill. Anyone can rap terrible. But it's hard to be a good rapper.

    That's all I gotta say.

That’s cool op but, rappers stay more relevant than singers for a longer period of time. Also in the last 10 years rappers (especially American rappers) have been way more popular than American singers around the world. People around the world that don’t even listen to western music can name pac, biggie, and even jay-z but when it comes to singers the only name that will come to mind will be MJ, even though they know him cause of the moon walk
Shouldn’t singers get more credit since singing is pure talent, while rapping can be acquired by training?

bcs they dig the catchiness of rap

Singing and rapping can both be trained

They are just different arts with a lot of overlap

The biggest rappers of the 2010s also sing (drake, kanye)

The biggest singers of the 2010s also rap (weeknd, frank ocean)

Drake only sings in the studio he doesn’t count. This is was about real singers. And yeah it’s easier to rap that’s why chumps like abel tried to do so and look how that turned out to be

Only if they have a natural singing voice. The Weeknd for instance was trained after the mixtapes but only because he already had a voice

    debatable.

both singing and rapping can be trained. It only gets as hard as you want.

it's like saying guitar is harder than bass imo.

    Elaborate then :word:

    • saying you can become great at rapping simply by training, implying it’s not a real art form or talent that requires skill and is merely something anyone can do (also this is lowkey racist)

    • implying that because you can get better and good at something through training and practice somehow makes it a less valuable talent (this is just completely ass backwards logic)

    • thinking singing well is something people are just naturally endowed with and also doesn’t require practice and training

    • implying Michael Jackson wasn’t known for his music internationally

    • a complete misunderstanding of what look for and value in music

    • thinking music based around singing isn’t historically much more popular than rap music. You say rap is “still” more popular as if it didn’t only become the most popular genre in the the past maybe 5 years

    • oh and I just saw your ed ass post about jazz

false premise who even said that?

  • Nov 10, 2020

this is a misconception, singing is as hard as rapping.

you can't really compare a good singer like The Weeknd to Comethazine, choose a good rapper like Lupe and the statement doesn't really hold much.

Check the charts check who are the most popular artists around the world. It’s rappers like em, jay z, snoop, but hardly any singers

i mean not necessarily. it’s essentially muscle memory, technique and placement. having a good foundation to start with makes it easier but if you compared a person with a natural singing voice that doesn’t train/practice to a person that didn’t naturally have it but works their ass off with a coach and consistently practices, you can guess who will sound better

I don’t just see a random producer, dj, camera man, weed Carrier, randomly start a singing career (unless they already were a singer and were finally showing their talent), but I see the same types of people mentioned here randomly become a rapper how sway?
