Can this ever go away or will it always be a covert theme in straight men audiences in hip hop? How?
This s*** kinda crazy to me cuz no matter the space I still see people s*** on doechii, cardi, Meg for like, really normal or even great rapping for being presented as from women, or more generic bars that apply to them they would praise from a male one.
It feels like female artists not only are scrutinized much more, but hated on in droves even in spaces like here in a way that’s unnatural. Their behaviour is monitored more, they aren’t awarded the same a***ysis. To the point I see people’s rap skills dismissed, who clearly have a talent at rapping better than a lot of men.
It’s always laced with some subtle s*** too like what they wear or whatever I ain’t seen 1 thread where mans don’t start talking about the girl’s looks or how sexy she is. it’s weird to me.
I see it here a surprising amount, even to the point people always deny their rise or paint them as w****s or claim no one listens to them, just because they don’t appeal to straight men around them. Unless it’s a woman with a modest appearance making traditional throwback music. Their expression of sexuality must be limited for respect.
In a heavily male dominated field? 0 chance
Feel like ive noticed it’s sort of a segregation between female and lgbt spaces and straight spaces when it comes to female rappers now, to the point their rises aren’t even seen by a lot of straight men and they think they just came outta nowhere at this point
I mean its not gonna be an easy road and it has a lot ot do with external societal issues than just hip hop but I don't see why not. Just compared now to how it was in the 90s.

Good point
its WAYY better than before
I feel like in other spaces I just don’t see it much anymore. Pop, electronic, folk & RNB music seem incredibly open with expressions of sexuality and femininity. That layer of the feminist subtext of it is acknowledged a lot I feel even if not explicitly. Hip hop I think has a unique root cause we all know but the question is to me is that root cause gonan always be binding to an extent?
I feel like it’s an issue that u can’t really call it out anymore without being labelled as just dismissing all criticism of an artist. I’ve had this done a lot with doechii, it ain’t even worth pointing out for me anymore

Ehh its complicated, cause i feel like you got to take account Intersectionality. Cause maybe misogyny for white straight women is not that apparent in those spaces, but what about non white women or queen women, etc ?
But yea, it doesnt help that hip hop is a very male dominated genre in terms of artists and its fanbase. Which is where you get situations like doechii where its a mix of misogyny, colorism and Aftermath of the beef

Well I mean if you look at those genres rn right we got
Amaarae’s new album critically acclaimed and beloved
FKA twigs eusexua was beloved it saw no pushback really despite her being naked
Lil Nas x and ice spice though rappers tended to have much more sucess with pop audiences
R&B thrives and has existed alongside black sexuality for a long time, summer walker is considered to have a classic despite her titties being in the cover and quite explicit lyrics
Troye Sivan put out a music video of naked men and it was one of the most beloved of the year
Kehlani has been openly bisexual for years and no one ever cared
Serprentwithfeet,hyperpop
I think as you said it’s prolly just that those spaces tend to have and be much more welcoming for queer people and women
I wonder though is Hip-Hop inherently tied to its Hyper masculine edge at this point to an extent?hard for me to say it doesn’t separate and define it to an extent
I feel like for a woman artist being queer doesn’t matter anymore because it appeals to the male gaze tho. Though queer artists are accepted I also feel like there’s a gut instinct esp from older folks to treat them as not standard in the canon artists if that makes sense.

This doesnt mean nothing tho, doechii album was critically acclaimed too, and like you just said she still experienced misogyny.
Pink pantheress has received acclaim as well and still said this recently
Amaarae has gotten hate all her career and is currently getting some rn for the album
Hip hop has had a hyper masculinity edge since the 90s. Like I said its a slow road but a lot of has to do with outside societal factors.
And maybe to a degree, women queer artist are accepted but not as much as you would think
It’s hard for a lot of men to listen to female rappers on the same level they listen to men.
It’s easier to find men that listen to female singers and popstars than listen to female rappers
But now that I think about it most of my male friends don’t listen to female singers like that either. It’s all just male rappers
Not anytime soon, partly because a sense of anti-blackness has been ingrained in today’s society, especially in the online world.
honestly i think misogyny in hip hop has gotten less and less frequent over the years and male artists keep putting more and more women rappers on their records
i dont think it'll ever die but its the same way that misogyny will never die in general you feel me
Once the “global superpowers” of the world stop operating within systems that legitimize turning human beings into cogs in the assembly line called “profit”, thus rationalizing humans turning the most vulnerable of us (e.g. women) into objects for our own pleasure
Then misogyny can die.
Yea because bimbo IGs have flooded the game compared to 2010s and s*** so its normal to respect their game nowadays
Hip hop a reflection of the social and material conditions of the community it's born from so unless the masses adopt a revolutionary stance no it's not possible

Expound on this
Nope. As long as rap is male dominated they will always call women b****es and hoes. It is what it is
@op The early 90s had an interesting push and pull cause…you had 2 live crew, uncle luke, snoop dogg, just…brimming the streets with misogyny
You also had Queen latifah (unity) and yoyo (you cant play with my yoyo) doing songs about female empowerment (shoutout to Ice Cube for putting a song like “Man’s World” on his 1st album. That was a real nigga move he did and pretty much put the gender wars of that time in audio form)
And also Pac with “keep ya head up” which might be the most male feminist song that didnt come off preachy or “try hard” but just literally telling it how it is:
when brothers make babies
and leaving young mothers to be the pappy
Like sidebar: really think of how painful the process of childbirth is and now go back to these actions and that s*** will really make you angry dawg.
And you could say that “push and pull” was inevitable and women were gonna pushback against what was a rising narrative.
C Dolores Tucker wasnt wrong but she was missing a whole lotta context which alienated her message from the Pacs of the world.
Expound on this
A lot of Female rapper fanbases are made up of majority women and lgbtq+ folks.

Expound does not the same thing as summarize
