Our sensibilities change. In those times he was relatively benign when it came to racism and advocated for colonialized and enslaved people. Anyone calling that racist should read what other people were writing in the 1850s and 1860s - and not in private either - to see what real racism, full of social darwinism, skull shapes, race science, genocide, slavery and so on, looks like.
