  • I enjoy how much cool behind the scenes are usually packed onto the Criterion movies and was curious if there was a distribution company that did the same, but with CDs?

I know it’s more difficult because it’s all audio and am also aware of box sets being a thing, but I was curious if there was anything similar?

Its hard tho cus movie physical releases in general historically have extra features attached anyways. Criterion does a great job at this, but its not a rare feature they're adding.

Also those boutique companies are easier to pull off because they're helping to restore and distribute films that often don't have wide physical releases or U.S releases at all. That's extremely difficult to do in music. Labels, publishers, etc.. already own the rights and simply neglect to put effort into physicals.

The only somewhat similar thing I can think of is Vinyl Me Please but that's just them distributing cool vinyl prints rather than extra features. Its also a hard business model they've struggled with recently

i feel like the format idea works better with movies where if you want to listen to an album it's probably available to stream at a tap of a button whereas for "arthouse" or foreign language film you're going to need to seek it out directly for the most part or have multiple streaming services

33 1/3 books kinda serve as a cool alternative to a music criterion collection
