The issue here is is that a "ceasefire" doesn't actually exist. There is no signed documentation or deep form of negotiation that ever took place yesterday.

Trump needed an out and leveraged Pakistan to make it happen. He wasn't going through with the threats and digging his grave further. Then on top of it Israel was never involved in any of this. Pakistan's message mentions that the U.S.-Iran ceasefire extends to Lebanon, but does not mention Israel nor did he tag any Israeli leadership accounts. That provides room for Israel to continue war with both Lebanon and Iran

For now, I doubt an Israel-Iran continuation breaks a U.S.-Iran ceasefire. Trump needed this at least temporarily.

The bigger issue was incapability to politically maneuver during the start of the conflict. He wasn't a vocal actor when he needed to be. Rubio had far more exposure to the conflict and had to defend it on national TV for 40 days and is barely damaged if at all cus he knows how to play the game. Vance is still a kid when it comes to high level games like this and his odds were always slim at getting elected at 44.

His profile is only being raised now because Iran wants him in talks precisely because they think they can get one over on him. Can't do this with Rubio who runs both State Department and National Security Council
