yeah the promo and trailers for this have looked amazing but idk, seeing all the reviews just giving this 4-5 stars because its "timely" or because it teaches us that racism is bad is just such lame criticism to me. Since when is a movie good simply because it tells us that lmao

I have seen little writing about how the movie actually presents these characters and whether there is any real depth to its story.

yea the trailers look good but critic bait

youtube critics are better even when they’re s***ty losers tbh. at least they’ll attack a movie with some nuance. critics paid to do their job just will listen to whatever the editor tells them to say

yeah ive always liked youtube critics more because they feel like they care more about a movies quality, even though a good amount of times tbh it just feels like they're trying to convince themselves the movie is well made because it got high praise from critics (like I feel someone like Stuckmann knows he ain't rly like half the critic bait movies he give a complimentary B+/A- rating to when he review em lol)

I like av club/ slant magazine/ reverse shot for film criticism though av club and slant definitely also go along with praising movies just because they have a pro diversity or race based message.

Well that’s cause ultimately it’s your job to watch it and decide that for yourself lmao critiquing the criticism for a film you haven’t seen yet seems like a fruitless pursuit

I'm just saying this because I have watched a good amount of these critic bait movies on social justice now (Mangrove, Half of It, Watchmen tv show, The Platform, High Flying Bird, Parasite, etc.) the past few years and most of them are extremely shallow and simplistic films getting good reviews just because it shills for some social justice message. Honestly with the exception of Da 5 Bloods, can't really say a lot of these movies do anything interesting beyond a very saccharine and shallow portrayal of social justice issues (at times legit narcissistic)

lowkey too tired to explain in depth as i normally would but industry commodifying the image of black radicals is

ik that sounds like a whole lotta nothing to the average person, but basically it leaves a lot of room for misinterpretation.

also making black radical leaders into icons and martyrs isn’t a good thing. fred hampton, i’m sure would be willing to die for his people. but he didn’t want to die at the hands of the fbi. nor was he a “messiah” he was just a man who spoke to his people. it’s important not to let history make these people bigger than “people”.

humanizing the informant is real, but it gives the writers a lot of room to add fluff and play it off as a necessary evil. make it seem like a required step in history that allowed us to do the things we can do today.

i’m not really saying exactly what i want bc i’m on the phone, it’s late, and i have a headache, so i hope another user can pick up ur question. i’m also doing a LOT of assuming for a movie i never watched. but there’s no reason to believe a movie funded by hollywood will do any good service to fred hamptons incredible legacy.

    just my thoughts

in general I think how Hollywood has depicted radicals been questionable at the least in the past couple years

I know that Sorkin movie that dropped this year was getting some s*** to for how it portrayed a leftist.

got you. i'll definitely be looking into fred hampton and learning about him extensively before watching the movie to avoid any of the possible bullshit that this movie could be pedalling, accidental or not

I get that but I just assumed the movie would be encompassing everything including the snitch, not focusing on the snitch.

so obv I ain't seen the movie, but it seems this movie is going to be moreso about COINTELPRO rather than a story about Fred Hampton

    HOWEVER

while many reviews have virtually ignored the subject of Hampton's marcist/socialist beliefs and how they are presented in this film, oddly enough IGN's writer wrote about it and said this:

"Phrases like “Marxist” don’t cross Hampton’s lips as they did in real life (although “socialism” does, and Hoover expresses fears of communism before mentioning Hampton), but Hampton’s speeches and instructions still lean explicitly anti-capitalist. One might easily note the inherent contradiction of a film about a Black communist revolutionary being funded by capitalist enterprise — it’s a valid critique — but the reality of politics vis-à-vis studio funding is the suits don’t often care what’s on-screen so long as it makes them money. It’s a depressing reminder of the degree to which “money speaks,” but on the other hand, it also leads to directors like King (and his co-writer Will Berson) being able to make Hampton’s politics a recognizable part of the film’s historical fabric, with minimal tiptoeing or watering down."
