There is a wrong way of doing it. I always got whoopings growing up that I never deserved, and I would have been the same person today without them. They were almost purely detrimental to my development, but I still wouldn't call them beatings.
Its unfortunate but thats the only way to get through to some kids and then if you have to then you have to but its on the parents to use proper judgement on when it is and isn't necessary.
