Often times when a person is suicidal they'll make a joke about killing themselves to "test the waters" and see how people respond. It's a misguided approach because people will of course take it as a joke, and the depressive will (often unconsciously) take it as a sign that people wouldn't care if they were to kill themselves. A person in this case is trying to "measure" whether or not they'll receive empathy.

I'm not saying that it's happening here, just pointing it out since so many people itt are upset that he's being flippant. I used to text friends things like: "if this bus ride takes any longer I'm going to kill myself." At the time I didn't even realize what I was doing consciously.
