In a small press conference with reporters pregame, Lakers VP of basketball ops and GM Rob Pelinka said that Charlotte reached out to LA regarding their need for a center.
The Mark Williams trade was negotiated and agreed upon between the two sides in less than two days.
Williams wasn’t openly on the trade market, but once he became available to them, LA decided to go all-in and make an aggressive offer for the 23-year-old big. Williams fit the center archetype that Pelinka and Luka Doncic discussed upon Doncic arriving in LA.

"He had 42 and 17 with eight assists. He's leading us in every way."
Gabe Vincent was asked if he could envision doing what LeBron is doing at 40: "I can't even think that far ahead. I don't even know what day of the week it is."
"I doubt this is the last time he'll have 40 over 40."
LeBron on the challenge of integrating Luka and other new pieces this late in the season:
"I don't really see a challenge."
LeBron James on what Mark Williams brings to the Lakers: "I was surprised that we were able to get him, to be completely honest. Just seeing his length. And seeing how young he is. ... I'm looking forward to getting him here and getting him acclimated to our system."
Austin Reaves feels the Lakers have grown as a team in terms of dealing with physicality and handling it better. There were certainly some physical moments in their win against the Warriors.
“It don’t make sense to me,” Austin Reaves on LeBron James. “…I don’t think anybody’s ever seen anything like this.”
Austin Reaves asked about Luka Doncic: “One thing I love most is his competitive spirit … (when he steps on the court), he’s in kill mode … I’m very excited to take the court with him.”
