Endgame literally starts off with Ironman deep in space recording a farewell message. I think most people who just jump in with Endgame will be asking:

"Why is Ironman lost in space?"
"How did Ironman get lost in space?"
"Who is the weird blue alien robot chick?"
"Who is that glowing space woman who saved Ironman?"
"Why is Ironman looking at Captain America and saying 'we failed'? What is it that they failed?"
"Why does the world look like the post-apocalypse?"

This is all explained in the first ten/twenty minutes though.

Thanos is a big bad Guy who defeated them and accomplished his goal of wiping out half of existence. Five years pass, and the Avengers give up and accept their defeat, and the world is apocalyptic.

IW never really explains why Thor is in space with the Hulk or why the Avengers are split up or why Cap is on the run or who the Guardians are (outside of Gamora)

  • Infinity War is the perfect Marvel Movie. A bad guy that poses a threat, technically wins, and nonstop action.

Don’t think I’m hating on IW y’all I still think it’s Top 5 MCU I just think Endgame is better lmao

Because IW’s greatness is driven by the spectacle of it all, finally seeing every hero in the MCU team up to fight one common enemy.

Endgame also has that spectacle in the last hour, but the first two hours are driven by character work and smaller, quieter emotional beats that IW doesn’t really have at all outside of Thanos/Gamora

everything about endgame is driven by IW.

tell me endgame stands on its own in any aspect without IW or the rest of the mcu before it

i mean bro. this is the movie the entire MCU plotline has been leading to for 10 years.

it is what it has to be and exceeds that by every margin or expectation.

its like saying el camino is better than the last 3 episodes of BB because it can “slightly” stand on its own. like. okay so what

Again, I did not see Ragnarok and still followed along with what was going on in the beginning just fine. So what is the actual point you are trying to make there? I don't think anybody cares about "Why are Thor and Hulk in space?" When they see Thanos and his crew show up, kill Loki, and take one of the stones he was hiding. It's easy to figure out what happened there.

As for "why are the Avengers split up and why is Cap on the run" they literally explain this during the movie...so what, it's okay for Endgame to explains previous events during the movie but it doesn't count when Infinity War does?

    I’m not saying that’s a bad thing.

I’m just saying as a stand-alone movie, and as a story/character driven movie, Endgame is stronger than IW.

IW is as amazing as it is for the sole reason that you said: it’s everything the MCU plot line has been leading to for 10 years.

When you remove that context it’s just a really solid action movie without any weight or emotional depth to it

why is that a metric for a better emotional or story driven experience.

i don’t see how the point you’re arguing for is relevant

They briefly mention it but it can still be a head scratcher to someone who doesn’t know.

You’re comparing 10 years’ worth of background and movies to one movie with a relatively simple plot that can be explained easily

Emotional weight is definitely a factor in how good or bad a movie is. If people don’t feel an attachment to the characters, it’s all empty spectacle.

Which I’m not saying is what IW is, but on its’ own, IW is just a really good action movie without any character depth or emotion.

My entire point is that IW and Endgame are both amazing movies, but I think Endgame is better because it’s more character driven, has a more complex storyline, and has more emotional depth to it.

u can’t really view IW and Endgame as stand alone movies considering they were originally revealed as a two part film and stayed that way for a long time

that’s still how i view it

how can you judge an avengers movie outside of the context it operates in?

You can judge any movie as just a movie.

The Force Awakens is the sequel to ROTJ but you can still judge TFA as a movie on its own right. How good it holds up without the decades long reverence around Star Wars behind it

They’re factually separate tho especially when you consider IW is structured and plays out like a Thanos film with a clear start and ending for his arc

It’s only a two parter for the Avengers characters, who only one of those films revolves around

“what are thor and tony traumatized about”
“why is hulk different and why is it a big deal”
“why is cap staring at this girl in the past, and who is the girl in the photo”
“why did antman come out of a portal inside a van, also who is he”
“why is half the population gone”
    “what are the infinity stones”
“why is everyone trying so hard to keep the big gold hand away from thanos”
“why do a bunch of random people come out of portals”
“why does the iron guy bring up 14 million chances to the wizard guy”
“why is starlord surprised to see gamora, also who are they”
“why did everyone scream when cap picked up a hammer”
    “why is there a racoon”

    IW/Endgame are actually 3 films

endgame has the hindrance of needing to be a follow up to IW, and also being the collective celebration of the mcu

IW is practically perfect, it doesn’t waste a single scene or line of dialogue, everything is building up to something and building on the previous movies while keeping all the different characters’ arcs and cores either intact or making them evolve
Also features the most iconic villain of the last 15 years only rivaled by the Joker
Crazy the russos pulled this off tbh

  • Aug 9, 2022

Funny enough I don’t think the asking questions issue is really an issue with IW/EG. They do pretty well as standalone films; the only people asking questions are people with vague knowledge of the MCU who feel like they have to ask questions

Who cares which one better can’t have one without the other

Audiences typically love the build up more than conclusion cause it’s fun to watch the bad guy win like in Empire Strikes Back
