Saw this comment and this sounds like the most likely and realistic option

“This movie has an issue, which is: it’s not “Marvel” enough for the big audiences. And for the cinefiles that love Chloé Zhao’s films like Nomadland it’s definitely not artsy enough (too many superhero cliches, too much CGI).

This is mostly the reason for the divisiveness in the reviews. Either not artsy enough / too many superhero element or too slow/artsy for others”

Or that may be over complicating it even more and it’s just not that fire

So basically it does not commit. I'm pretty sure all the Marvel f***ery in this movie is mandatory, like they will let you experiment, as long as one of the characters in the movies will remember to quip after a tragic death

Shang Chi didn't go all the way with committing as well, but that first half was fresh

Damn I was gonna check out the rest of her discography because I loved Nomadland

hear countless saying it doesn’t commit to what it wants to be, leading to a lackluster marvel formula attempt and lackluster artsy attempt

Social media really has messed up the way y’all approach watching/listening to things.

  • Nov 3, 2021

Just got back from watching this. Here are some thoughts:

    • Casting was pretty bad!
    • I don't think Gemma Chan or Rob Stark have enough chemistry or charisma to pull off such otherworldly roles
    • Dude playing Gilgamesh was also terrible
    • I was amped to see Kumail in this role but he was also terrible... they gave him the cringy Marvel humor and he was meant to be the charismatic goof but it did not work at all
    • Kumail's sidekick was cringe
    • Humor in this movie in general was pretty terrible... even for Marvel standards
    • It's pretty dull the first half and the pacing and dialogs feels extremely clunky but it picks up in the second half and it felt like a an actual team coming together in the 3rd/4th act
    • CGI monster villains were dull as s***, poorly designed and did not feel threatening at all
    • Jolie was good, so was Barry Keoghan and the dude from Atlanta

Overall this is a misfire from Marvel and I can see how its getting mid reviews. Marvel has had terrible films in the past but they all played within the formula so I think most people gave them a pass.

This tries to do something different but fails at it for the most part. I think the story they are trying to tell here would've worked better as a miniseries.
