People like McKinley Dixon, MIKE, JID go without saying
but I wanna highlight where it isn’t recognized in artists that’s appeal don’t rest on their subject matter or are perceived that way edit: this isnt to say every example here means the artists career is that lol
Yeat: the entire 2093 album and new EP and quite a couple moments on his projects before

Doechii: surprised this is a misconception

Veeze: whole last quarter of ganger

Fakemink career:

Jim Legxacy’s whole album is about his grief after losing his sister and his father abandoning the family

Nino Paid’s career:

Feng:

Even Osamason has these moments:

Che has shown it:

This album filled with a couple revealing moments like this that add a dif tone to his extreme dark hedonist war cries of excess on here, before a beat switch he had a short story that concluded with “momma kicked my ass out, ok now she not playing” then a beat switches and it sounds like the pits while he croaks “I called the plug said I’m dying” - while simple kinda crushing. Edit: Not to say it’s overall a super venerable album obviously
Prettifun:

454:

Untiljapan’s trompe l’oiel, an artsy maximalist project about heartbreak and loss that’s beautiful

future’s writing style is just incredibly influential, so it’s delivered through both tough exteriors and hedonism on its face through moments of vulnerability that show crushing self awareness or realities behind the addiction or whatever’s going on. This is deployed a lot more than back in the day, and irony is a common tool, it’s just the way the music sounds may bury it for a lot of listeners.
Another I could mention
Edward Skeletrix - all his lyrics are this weird blend where you can’t tell what’s genuine social commentary, comedy, or genuine vulnerability, the music and lyrics tend to mirror his time dealing with dissociative episodes and working in the psych ward

i'm sorry but starting your thread off with yeat as your first example already makes me skeptical of whatever else you have to present

And that’s a testament to biases and how unfamiliar ppl are with his recent work, exactly to my point. 2093 was a industrial hip hop electronic fusion magnum opus about a dystopian reality shaped by his mind at war/road to sobriety and that’s STILL not enough for him to not be immediately dismissed. Exactly to my point
S***s f***ing deep
!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ssj5ZBuhwIo10 Percs had me kinda like damn, somebody save this man
The fact all I’m getting is people immediately writing off artist’s actual documentations of their trauma and pain is a great example of the actual anti intellectualism anti art that yall go on and on about on the threads s***ting on “the state of the game”
fire thread
and also correct
future’s vulnerability will continue to influence into the next decade
still have yet to give ganger a listen. i got to now
It’s great, he’s lyrically really talented aside from his super unique style and beats,
For most of it’s he’s pretty witty, funny, and clever and it really has moments of oh s*** this feels wrong or genuine vulnerability like the last quarter
Kinda like a happy or hopeful Lucki lol
I consider it a personal modern classic enjoy that s*** twin

when Nettspend said "I feel like Future but Gen Z" it made me feel so... not 'sad' per se, but like 'damn, this is a kid'.
and obviously everyone knows the 'baller' future as his main image, but I feel like real fans of him know that he really spits pain and d*** anthems for people who numb themselves with substance, and that's what Nettspend is telling us

"Drugs in my drink, I fell asleep
And they love what they see, but don't get close to me"
Lol this vid is gonna be so useful for me in the future thanks
If you gotta hand pick some occasional quotables to execute this thread, than its a lost cause

To the point about nettspend too look at how this album opens

Yes it’s juvenile as hell an but this is a CHILD saying these things and they shouldn’t be dealing with this addiction, depravity, and suicidal thoughts, he was 16-17 when most of this was made. He talks too on the album about being kicked out of school in freshman year moved to rural VA clearly turning to d**** before rap started working. Professor Skye has a good video on this (despite the hilarious horrible title)

I posted examples not cherrypicking, as I said if you read the op post it’s about rappers who aren’t perceived as being about that or aren’t like conscious rappers lol. Those aren’t just some quotables and I clearly demonstrated what I’m talking about. It’s 15 artists in the OP + I reference how more street centered artisrs do it nonstop.
Bigxtheplug, $ilkmoney,yb,gunna, samara Cyn, pink siifu, zelooperz, navy blue, Paris Texas, red veil. Kenny mason can all be referenced too.
Added bigx and Nino for u in the OP. I could include Lucki, smino, bruiser wolf but I’ve exclusively limited it to 2020s dominant artists and or aren’t older in age
