my take
as a gamer who enjoys remakes, most new IPs are dogshit, multiplayer-focused, lack meaningful single player experiences, or are great IPs that become dogshit over time due to the previous reasons
Rather than having a new instalment of The Division, a new Ghost Recon, a new Rainbow Six, new Max Payne, I'd rather remakes to relive and recreate the memories of what were once great games and series
Video’s premise is kind of s***ty. Who are these companies forgoing “risks” and relying on old games?
Konami remade Silent Hill and they’re making new Silent Hill games
The Resident Evil remakes haven’t stopped Capcom from producing new Resident Evil games.
The MGS3 Remake didn’t stop Konami from also releasing the old ports.
SSM is working on a new game despite the GoW remakes.
I also think criticisms like this too often ignore the creative desires of developers. Maybe not every game we get is 100% because it was demanded and shaped by the wills of shareholders. Maybe those developers want to go back to the projects that defined them with new eyes and new ideas? Maybe they want to do something cool for an anniversary?
This s*** gets too cynical sometimes.
People want remakes cause they want to play older classic games but any kind of friction will make them shortcircuit. They don't think of games as art but as product so they want to "modernize" and "fix" game design decisions that are still perfectly fine and part of what made these games classics in the first place in order to more easily approach and experience them. A lot of people also cant stand pre HD era graphics.
Heard too many people say that RE2R and RE4R completely replace the originals to the point even capcom ended up agreeing with them and it makes my blood boil.
Im fine with trasformative remakes like FF7R and RE2R, as long as the originals are still available (on that note, capcom please drop RE2 PS1 on all platforms)
In general the streamlining of games by removing all friction is a very worrying trend that has started to hit many beloved series like monster hunter and lowkey souls games, but that's a topic for another thread (maybe i'll make it when i have time)

This. When they delete the old games, it's the worst
The graphics only remakes are stupid af
Enjoyed the remake of Actraiser big time cuz it added enough stuff it almost felt like a sequel
Feel like remakes should only be warranted if there’s aspects that really needed fixing, remakes of the og resident evils for instance
The remakes of recent games like last of us with slight graphical upgrades can f*** right off

Facts and agree
Personally I do dislike remakes or remasters of more recent games (relatively speaking) but I love when an old game comes back, especially if it's a remake of entry for a series that isn't happening anymore and/or if it's a game I didn't have the chance to play back then but been wanting too and now can
Also there are old games with issues or inaccessible, and if you're not a PC player, you are f***ed on them unless they get a good remaster or an at least decent remake - you have no emulators and you have no mods or emu options on console nor do you have access to most of them
