too early to use the internet to your advantage
regionalism made it harder to break through
studio time, beats, promo, etc. were more expensive
awkward time in the middle of hip hop being mainstreamed where rappers got all the scrutiny and expectations of pop stars but not nearly as much praise

rappers had to prove themselves, and it shows because the total talent in that era is higher than any other (higher highs in the early to mid 90s, but less consistent)

i think there are stars it’s just harder to tell because we all aren’t getting news from the same sources, so a Rod Wave having the same per show gate revenue as SZA and Kendrick did on their last tours flies under the radar
