Seeing this on every Best Of list and top 4 Letterboxd screenshots and realizing this is the film that I think is most overrated of this year, in my opinion.

I enjoyed The Worst Person in the World much more. Maybe I'll rewatch this one somewhere down the line.

    you're not wrong

surprised at how many people who said they were emotionally affected by this, when I thought it was simply a bit too emotionally distant, not unlike a Bergman film. examining the relationship between family trauma with art, not unsimilar to Jay Kelly, though both failed to make me feel anything. I will say that the birthday present scene was hilarious however.

    Yup, Jay Kelly too

I've been watching Joachim since Oslo August 31st. He's definitely matured on the craft side of things. The structure of this film and the way he cuts to manage the tone. Juggling the omniscient timeline stuff. Very well done.

The scene where the daughters reconnect. The scene where he visits his old cinematographer. Those got me. I found everything else less effective. The Scandinavians have the hierarchy of needs pretty well figured out. Like, just go to therapy and enjoy your fulfilling lives.

lol it is funny how the conflict could instantly be resolved if she just read the script but that's also the point i guess

I don't find the plot entirely compelling, but it's the most gorgeous frame to hang some beautiful performances around

I’m still figuring out how I feel about the movie but I feel like the whole point is that they didn’t have the relationship to where they were able to talk to each other

The father couldn’t communicate how he felt so he wrote it into a movie. She doesn’t want to hear him out cause he’s been out of her life for years so she doesn’t feel like he deserves to be heard just cause he wants closure

  • yh this was nice prefer after the hunt but i know thats way more poppy this was nice good watchnot uite great well acted and directed but didnt have the WOW factor elle fanning did her thing looking subtly leng as well main actress kept reminding me of kin actress n the dad kept reminding me of joe biden

    this was nice and comfortable.

one of those movies thats gonna sit quietly in the back of my head for a while, i presume.

truly felt like a slice of life type of thang. no need to mention "oh it's been 3 months" -- just assume the viewer is intelligent enough to keep up with the pace. that's admirable.

As in did I know it was a scene? Yeah I figured from the start.

    Unless there’s something I’m missing?

I wish I liked this as much as everyone else seems to.

Not that I didn't like it, I think it's a very well-made film. I just fw TWPIW a lot and I was expecting this to surpass that. Maybe I played myself.

inga ibsdotter lilleaas does godly stuff in this just with her eyes and reactions without words. you can see decades of family dynamics just in the way she will look at someone or internally react to something

The Worst Person in the World is one of my favorite movies ever and this one is only slightly weaker. Amazing.

I think this one shoots for something a lot richer, deeper, more universal, more ambitious. Whereas worst person, which did have its real ass stuff, was really anchored to one person and was smaller and more intimate. This one is intimate too but I think just on account of it trying to be something richer and more ambitious, there’s more room for error and it works less for people. I love them both and atm I’m leaning towards this one
