That’s one of the only business practices he was actually pretty thorough about, he’s cleared samples that didnt even make it final versions of songs before, such as Praise God on the same album. this probably slipped through the cracks by the time the sample even reached Kanye

We don't know if he has or hasn't paid for the sample until someone says something or some paperwork comes up tho

Just because "we" didn't know the sample doesn't mean they didn't

But yeah Kanye is good with sample clearing since the beginning and one of the the things that actually built good relationships in the industry for him pre CD - only reason I can see this not being paid is if it's really obscure to them with no paper trail or accessible information about it, or if it came from someone else that didn't tell him it's a sample

I assume it is paid (or too obscure/lost to time/lost in translation that it "doesn't need" clearing) tho until further notice

True, there’s always the possibility of behind the scenese transactions but it just feels unlikely that the original artist would be like “pay me under the table and do not credit me”

Especially when Praise God could have EASILY gone without having the sample cleared, as it was removed throughout the song process. I dont sense any foul play from Kanye here, but one of his many producers might have tried to impress him and presented him the beat without mentioning the sample

  • great sample and incredible beat

True, I didn't think of the credit aspect unless one of the names is just someone we don't recognize n didn't notice (just talking in general, idk the actual credits)

Sometimes they don't get actually credited but yeah it depends - that's a good point tho if there's no sign at all of an artist, org or the song title somewhere in the credits

  • Aug 25, 2025

He really wanted to end the song with that black man never share their rib line huh

As far as I know, the only time a sampled artist doesnt get credited as a songwriter is if all parties involved with the sample decline a cut of publishing, in favor of a behind the scenes up front payout. Doing that on a Kanye West single pre-2022 wouldve been a poor decision financially.

Pusha T said Kanye was the kind of guy to give up 100% of publishing to a sampled artist if it meant getting the song out. I really dont believe he skimped on sample clearances intentionally

I Am A God is another Kanye song with a cleared sample that didnt get used on the released version of the song

This was actually found using Google Assistant. The recognition feature of that AI has gotten pretty insane.
