It's hard for it to be both really

One is saying: you are who you are at your core. That cannot be fhanged. You should seek to understand who you are to the best of your ability so you can truly master it and control the bad habits that may come from it.

The other is saying: You can fundamentally overcome who you are to get rid of the bad habits entirely

    what about u??

I think your true self can not be completely changed, but the bad habits that come from your self can be controlled

  • But that wouldn't be your self changing it would be you mastering yourself and making the most of your potential

    i agree!

i think what people consider their true self, thats actually just a pattern of habits, is a lot smaller than they realize.

It's like the most important part of yourself but people dont think about it as much because they are distracted by other things

    yes.

i saw this girl writing down a bucket list when i was in a coffee a couple years ago.

and it was like 8am on a weekday. it made me so happy somebody just took some random day out for the week to like reflect like that.

i think reflecting about things that are true to u, is only done in the best and worst moments. but is best done during boring ones

I'm reading this thing and it says there are three parts of your own happiness/maximizing joy

1 - who you are as a person
    2 - what you have
3 - how others see you

And that the first part is much more important than the other two. The second two are brief distractions from the core of your existence which is yourself.

Someone who was born with a good nature will be more likely to be able to find joy regardless of their circumstances. If you focus on your own nature and adapt your life around that instead of your nature around your life you are more likely to find happiness

i took a class with a prof whose job was to be a spiritual care nurse. so when people were going to die, if they were a specific religion she would get the priests who whoever they request.

but if a lot of people dying were not religious, but still wanted to do something resembling religion anyway. some kind of prayer with familly, maybe reconnect with the religion their familly is but broke away from etc.

she suggested this book from someone else who did that for a living, that was the top 5 regrets of the dying, i will list them!

"I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
    "I wish I hadn't worked so hard."
"I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings."
"I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends."
"I wish that I had let myself be happier."

    these are the top 5

See this aligns with the belief kinda

Living a life true to yourself is the whole idea of what the other guy is saying

Working hard to acquire more is a distraction from the true path to experiencing joy

Honest self expression can only be done by understanding who you are

Allowing yourself to be happier is not beating yourself up because you are overly concerned with what is external like the second and third portion

I've only read the first chapter and it already has led to this fun discussion and has made me think lots

Maybe books aren't boring but just fiction books are boring

  • It's very wordy/rambly so you gotta read it slow

He's like going on tangents basically

    But the content seems good

i read a book in the fall that was written by a doctor who for a study got a bunch of kids at a middle school or high school

and they overhauled their program so excercise was a scheduled, daily activity. like major overhauled.

and the kids not only got the highest grades in their district, which had never happened before, but were using self directed excercise as a form of stress management.

so when they had tests they would go for runs when they were overwhlemed or soemthing.

it was so convincing its what made me wanna go to the gym!

just an anecdote about none fiction books, theres great stuff in there

I love going for a walk when I'm stressed or upset

I feel like that's normal and good advice tbh
