Tuneoutit was the only industry here for hundreds of years outside of logging. then foreign (mostly asian) fishing boats used trawlers (which are nets that scrape the bottom of the ocean and ruin the ecosystem, catching literally everything, 90% of which you cant use) and it depleted the cod fish stocks, so the canadian government put a moratorium on cod fishing in the 90s and it was single largest layoff in canadian history.
its one of a few reason why newfoundland is the poorest province in canada.
