NATO is an alliance that was specifically constructed to oppose Russia. to say that ukraine joining it would not affect Russia is absurd.

    its a purely defensive alliance.

they won't do anything to Russia unless Russia invades a NATO country. They aren't even rlly pushing militarily against this invasion rn cus Ukraine is not NATO.

There is not a real risk for Russia in Ukraine joining NATO. I'm pretty dam sure Russian leadership knows this too. Yes, they say that its because of NATO encroachment but I'm pretty sure thats just to save face in public.

Ukraine, even if it does join NATO, does not present any serious threat to Russia. Russia could sit back and do NOTHING and they would be totally fine.

Starting a war is expensive, unnecessary, ruins tons of diplomatic work, and gets Russia so many sanctions

plus it already cost them Nord Stream 2

    and what do they gain?

Made this post earlier itt about why
Ukrainian NATO membership is a threat for Russia, what are your thoughts:

NATO is a military alliance that was formed in case that the West would possibly ever have to go to war with Russia during the cold war. Article 5 says that if one NATO member is attacked, it's regarded as an attack against all NATO members.

With the taking down of the Berlin wall, the US promised to Gorbachev would not move "one inch forward" to the East. A promise that has not been held as many other Eastern European countries have joined NATO.

The reason Ukrainian NATO membership is such a threat is that Ukraine is right at their borders. The black sea fleet in the Crimea was Russia's only fleet that was available year round, which is why they annexed the Crimea in 2014 after the US-backed coup in Ukraine, because they would lose access to that fleet which they see as crucial for their security.

In addition, Ukraine has also hinted at "liberating" (ie invading) the Crimea, if Ukraine does that as a NATO member, it's essentially the same as entirety of the West invading the Crimea, as Putin said here:

So that's why Putin is trying to prevent this, he's taking it very far and taking a by any means necessary approach to it.

yeah but its still kind of irrational like I'd say the price Russia will pay in sanctions is totally not worth it. NATO is not an offensive alliance, it's purely defensive. There's a pretty minimal threat to Russia if Ukraine is left alone. In my eyes, an invasion isn't worth it and doesnt make that much sense.

my a***ysis aside, no matter how in depth u go, u won't actually know why this happened unless some discussion Putin has had gets leaked. He's objectively the only one who knows for sure. You might be able to piece together a good guess but still that's all its gonna be, a guess.

    understand dugin understand putin

nato being a purely defensive alliance is entirely disproven after we bombed kosovo and then bombed iraq and then bombed libya and then bombed syria and then bombed afghanistan

Having a primarily anti-Russia military alliance parking its troops in a country that deperately wants crimea back isn't a serious threat to russia?

    no it isn't

    NATO is defensive.

Crimea is currently recognized as part of Russia. Ukraine "getting it back" would 100% be offensive. There would be zero reason for NATO to back that.

yep. from Russia POV they are protecting their national sovereignty from an encroaching hostile alliance, is what they would say.

Which is a bullshit claim because non of the ex USSR states that are now in NATO and bordering Russia would attack them

    They fear them

And maybe the Crimea wouldn't be annexed by Russia if the US didn't install a pro Western government in Ukraine that threatens their access to their only year round available fleet

Nothing about NATO is hostile, its a defensive alliance. Joining NATO would protect them from Russian aggression, NATO would not side with them if they invaded Russia.

this may be true maybe they aren't a purely defensive alliance but the point is if Ukraine had joined NATO the likelihood of any invasion of Russia would still have been incredibly minimal.
