Starting a war is expensive, unnecessary, ruins tons of diplomatic work, and gets Russia so many sanctions
plus it already cost them Nord Stream 2
and what do they gain?
Yeah but Russia is in desperate need for warm water ports which is why they're doing this. They would've probably left the rest of Ukraine alone if ukrainians didn't have acces to the north crimean canal.
Ukraine and Russia had the chance to negotiate this on business terms prior to 2014 but Ukraine chose to align itself with the west. Putin is getting pretty old and paranoid. There's no way a strict business relationship would've lasted long.
