the bass sounds that we all know and love.
i know the name comes from the drum machine but i’ve always been confused by that. there are so many other sounds that come out of the roland, why choose to name a low freq bass the “808”? and when did people start calling it that?
The modern day 808 came from a lot of producers and engineers messing around with white noise.
A lot of trap drums as well.

I believe the ‘808’ bass sound came from the kick drum that the Roland 808 drum machine had, as u mentioned in OP.
The kick sound was basically just like a short sub bass noise, and boosting that volume, distorting it, adding noise to it, turned into the 808 sub bass noise. And now any sound that’s like that is called an 808

Another reason why engineers should get paid way more than they should.
The Roland drum machine kick was pitched down, boosted and distorted into the style we know today that is used for many kick and bass practices since the 00s
That's it

808 comes from the Roland 808 Machine, nothing deeper than that

This doesnt sound correct at all, do you mean like band pass filtered noise? Kicks are generally just pitch enveloped oscillators with clicks.
Where does the noise factor in?
Imo it shouldnt be called an 808 if its not from or modelled exactly after the actual drum machine. Kinda pisses me off ngl

Trust me man, if you had my professor who is a sound designer....
You would be shocked
