be more connected with myself and my physical surroundings instead of on my phone/computer
basically just means engaging in my hobbies and interests more
more reading, better cooking, consistent exercise, regular meditation and prayer
also wanna be more proactive setting up social engagements. wanna invite people over to my house more, ask to hang with others, organize meetups at places/doing things, hit more concerts, etc.

Biggest goal is to just start living healthier by reintroducing good habits i once had, and creating new ones. For the first time in the past 15 years i am at a point where I need to lose some weight. Now that im at an age where it will soon become harder to do that, and my PCP is wanting to start checking my cholesterol and other things, I think i'm quickly approaching my "now or never" point. I would also like to develop some muscle too — not a lot or anything, just the amount that results from these new habits.

Some things i want to start doing to accomplish this:

    • Get back into routine exercising. I already have a nice basic set of free weights and mats, as well as a rowing machine. I want to start doing daily 1 hour workouts either in the morning before getting ready for work, or when i get home.

    • I want to implement brief body weight/free weight workouts whenever i have 15 mins during work. I have already brought my two 10lb free weights to my office, so having them in sight after meetings is a good reminder.

Eating healthier. Most of the past decade my husband and I have been good about making dinner at home, and i was great about eating fast food in moderation. But since moving and getting a new job where I have to commute 30+ mins every morning, I have fallen into the trap of grabbing lots of fast food breakfast/lunch out of convenience.

    • Ice-cream and milkshakes have also become a huge problem for me recently. I was never a stress-eater, but when i crave a milkshake or ice cream and eat one, it makes my whole day a little better. I need to supplement that ritual with better treat/reward systems.

    • In general, I need to push myself to be more active and sit less. This hasn't been a big problem in my life until relatively recently. My new position put me in my own office where im spending more time at my desk than i ever have before. Add that to sitting around the house after work, and it's become a trap into the typical sedentary lifestyle.

It's wild how intimidating creating a healthier lifestyle can be. Feel like i'm extremely healthy in many aspects of my life. I have already done so many things to improve my health in other areas over the past few years, including multiple processes to fix/correct different medical conditions in my joints, eyes, and mouth. But those things were relatively easy to start doing because of my personality.

Meanwhile, the diet, exercise, and body habits are going to be drastic lifestyle changes that I know will be a huge challenge for my willpower and self-discipline.

The biggest advice for the phone thing I can give that greatly changed my life a few years ago is to actively set your phone down somewhere that requires physically walking in order to reach it — whether it be across the room, or in a different room. I even started with small steps by tossing my phone to the other end of the couch whenever i sat down.

It's only a struggle, or gives you that "naked" feeling the first handful of times you do it. But after a week or so I wasnt even thinking twice about it and significantly decreased my daily phone time.Nowadays I will be working on something, or even just being lazy in my living room, and will not have seen my phone in so long that i cant even remember where I set it down.

And this has also translated into other screentime areas of my life too. I bought the first M1 macbook model when it came out (the ones that still had the touchbar), and I've barely opened it over the past 2 years (and i mean barely). Luckily it wasnt a waste of money because i let my husband use it daily to do his job — thats how little i think about using it myself.

So just try little things like that and dont beat yourself up when you backslide on them. Self-improvement is a process. If you keep trying and form good habits, there will be a day where you open your Screen Time app and see your weekly average is like 3 hours, and that will feel normal. And any average over even just 12 hours will feel insane and you wont believe that you used to live like that.

My husband is a crackhead with his phone, like way worse than some people probably imagine when they think of someone addicted to their phone (outside of influencers/livestreamers i mean). His DAILY average on Screen Time will sometimes be 12+ hours... He's severely close to the point where the only time he's not looking at his phone is when he's literally unconscious. So i know how much of a struggle changing this can be.

My real "best advice" to help others with this issue that I also did myself would be telling you to delete all your social media accounts and apps (including Discord if you use that). Doesnt even have to be scorched earth in one move — go cold turkey on one of them at a time until they're all gone. That will cause an extreme and positive change in your screen habits, but also your life in general. However, I know how relunctant people are to do this — even to take a short break from them, let alone deleting accounts without the option to restore later. So I think giving people advice on **physical** habits first could be a more effective approach.
