This your first Eggers?
I believe so… and I normally like this stuff but this one just didn’t do it for me
We onthe way to the cinema rn sorry to anybody that i annoy with my constant cough but i need to see big daddy eggers new kino

Ive yet to see it in 30 mins but isnt this supposed to be a pretty straight forward revenge flick with just some lil Eggers quirks sprinkled here and there

I mean the overall point of the movie was easy to understand but like everything else and all the little details wasn’t

Just came home and only thing im let down by is it not being weird enough
nah tbh let down isnt the right word this might be my fav Eggers so far this was entertaining af even though his other two features had better atmosphere at times
I appreciate Eggers finally embracing the insanity bc that was my main gripes with his work before this... that they were too tame for my liking
Lighthouse was insane dont get me wrong but he could have gone anywhere with Dafoe & Pattinson in that setting
And the VVitch ending was one giant cock tease
I get that it worked in those films their favor as well but i just really enjoyed how easy to get into Northman was. Super entertaining

That's how I felt too tbh, not weird enough

Let me clarify bc i see my other post above you agreeing with me that it wasnt weird enough
What i meant by embracing the insanity was the fact that it was so over the top
And saying how his other films were more tame was moreso speaking on how they left me wanting more whereas with this one i did feel satisfied enough even though he didn’t take the Northman to another realm like those previous efforts
As a simple viking revenge story with some great action moments and hints of mysticism this was all i needed tbh
Really enjoyed this one at the end of the day

The i-word is in so many movies lmao and it was such a minor part of the northman
And i could say the same for witchcraft or the supernatural, they kept those scenes very surface level even from a visual standpoint
I loved the film but it really wasnt that weird

I was halfway joking with my reply but the fact that you’re a noe head & thoroughly enjoyed this is proof its weird
, especially for something apparently stylized as a blockbuster,
I agree about the story being straightforward but he did a great job weaving some unconventional motifs in
I’ve seen it 3 times already
Robert Eggers is an absolute master and Alexander absolutely DEVOURS the script, every single line is impactful
Easily the best movie of the year and might be my fav of the last 5 years
This film also has some hilarious moments tbh, very well placed and work perfectly imo

What’s Eggers style? Is it straight forward & not polarizing? Or is it?
FYI, I don’t like artistic movies, that induce you to think too deeply using shock value (The Holy Mountain, example).
I understand their allure but just not my cup of lean.

Holy Mountain also dense with metaphor and allegory which is what makes it "artistic" whereas if it was just the shock value stuff it would be a forgotten exploitation movie or whatever. Eggers style usually a little more out there but this is pretty straightforward. only a little bit of weird viking ritual and mythology stuff might confuse you.

The film was substance over style, which I respect someone like Eggers doing.

I dont really agree care to explain

I’m not saying the film was “style-less”, just that he formatted it to function as something much more understandable than Lighthouse and more of an action movie compared to vvitch.

Just bc the Northman was intended for a larger audience doesn’t make his other films style over substance. Especially the VVitch was also really straight forward
The Lighthouse was super left field and quirky but that was probably the film with the most substance if you really want to dig deep

Never said his other movies were like that
